So it's a nice sunny day. A Trackhoe weighing 20 tons is riding along on a flatbed trailer, heading east on Interstate 70 near Hays, Kansas at approximately 65 mph...

I saw the pictures of that about a year ago. Guy was driving on a highway that he should not have been on. There are more pics. that look nasty. Caused a real mess to fix. Happened some where in the Midwest.
We had some nitwit do that locally with a much smaller device, I think it was just a backhoe. Unfortunately, when he hit the bridge whatever he tore loose went across the barrier into the oncoming lane and killed a mother coming the other way. There's still a mark on the bridge. I think of that every time I drive under it.
when i look at that , i would have thought the trackhoe would have
been more damaged. it seems to me that 'arm' would have been ripped off the base.

those arms are very strong, older concrete bridges not so much.the rebar is the only thing holding it together,so with the momentum it just ran thru it like a b.f.h. being swung by a giant.
have seen similar incidents on person.
14 foot tractor trailer trying to go under 13 foot bridge, tractor made it, trailer wedged tightly under bridge.
county dumptruck goes thru intersection with bed up, rips down traffic lights and about 6 poles, driver said pto just all of a sudden kicked in by itself.

I remember seeing a National Geographic magazine a looooong time ago showing a pic of a car hauler full of brand new Volvo sedans get crunched like that.
"If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them."
I'm gonna say that track hoe is loaded on the drop trailler backwards. From the looks of it he punched through
the roadway of the bridge, not the side beam, telling me the lower boom was up too high on the track hoe.
Had he been loaded in the correct direction he may have wedged under the bridge perhaps, but not destroyed it
and everything as much as he seems to have. That drop Frame trailer is wasted & twisted too.
I wonder how he did the second time he tried to drive a diesel car. . . .

That reminds me, this Lincoln was on the top tier of a car carrier...the owner was having his car shipped to him in Florida. But before it got there, it had been slightly modified by a low bridge.
