F250 Identification

Post by six-two »

Does anyone know how to identify a F250 without a VIN? My title says that my truck is a F-250 but to my untrained eye it looks like a half ton. The previous owner thought it was a F-100 but he didn't know either. The thing is I don't have the VIN on my door and I don't know where else it would be. I guess the springs would be the way to tell, but I'm not sure. By the way there are no badges on the car or any other identifying marks, and the motor and tranny aren't original either. There are photos in my gallery for reference, to my knowledge this truck hasn't been lowered.

For me the easiest way is the F100 has 5 lug wheels and the F250 had 8 lugs. At least when I drive by that is what I look for.

By your pictures it looks like a F100. The wheels are 5 lug 5x5 1/2 pattern. If it was an F250 it would have 8 lugs on the wheels. Regardless it looks great.

depending on the year they sometimes put the VIN tag on the inside of the glovebox door. you might try there if you havent already.

R/H frame rail, just behind the shock tower. My 62 has the "door" tag on the glove box door. Your title should also have the number, it would be something like F10AD123456 (F100) or F25AD123456 (F250)

The VIN should be stamped on top of the frame passenger side about a foot or so back from the core support. It should also be on top of the frame passenger side under the floor pan.

On my 62, it's behind the shock tower.

Thanks everybody, tomorrow when it gets light outside I'm going to go out and see if I can find that VIN.(unless its snowing again) I'm going by the title VIN now which says the truck is a f250. I've always thought that it looked like a half-ton though, I think the 5 lug wheels were what gave it away. I read somewhere that the VIN was on the door and mine doesn't have it, now I know where else to look. Thanks again

I would guess between the shortbed and the five lug wheels that your truck is a F-100. If there's no tag in the glovebox, check the frame locations these guys have said.

Yeah, I know I've been lazy, but there is snow and ice outside(allergic unless armed with snowboard/skiis) and I haven't looked yet. But yes it is a shortbed, I bet it is a f100. Now what I'm wondering is, whats up with the title. Who knows, since it needs front end work, I haven't tried to get the title and registration work done on it yet. THANKS AGAIN!!!

I had the same problem My truck was titled as a 65 F100 but it is clearly a 65 F250 4x4 some PO had removed the tag years ago I found all the PO's the one guy owned it for 20 years with the F100 title also talk to the guy that owned it before him he said it was a F100 not a F250 but he sold it to a junkyard thats where the title gets changed they did not have a title for the F250 and they used the F100 title paper work. I found the vin number on the passenger side frame rail about six inches from radiator F26DE664925 the truck is now titled as a F250 with N.C had to do some paper work to get it right but it is correct with the way insurance companys these days they can drop you for no reason I did not won't this to happen to me I have enough bad luck :!: Good luck in straighting out the title
