speedometer problem

Post by 66Gobbler »

Anyone know what may cause a speedometer/odometer to stop working? The needle wont register mph and the odometer also doesnt change. It will click and the needle will jump a little but thats it. Sounds like something is in a bind. The cable turns freely. What could go wrong in the speedo head?

The speedometer end of your cable should be square. The cable end can sometimes round out the recieving hole in the back of the speedometer, sometimes just barely catching just enough to make the needle jump.
It's that, or something is wrong with the gear that is in the tailshaft of the transmission.

it coul dalso be the inner cable sticking inside the outer cable. if it jumps all the time. cleaning the inner cable could help unless its in the trans gear or the cable is bad.

Pull the transmission end out of the cable out, and turn it by hand while someone is watching the speedometer.
It should rotate easily, smoothly and make the needle move up.
Reverse the rotation if nothing seems to happen or the needle moves down.
If nothing happens either direction, you need to pull the gear off the end of the cable, and check the core. (Remove the metal clip and the gear pops off.)

If the needle moves fine with you turning it by hand, check the driven gear for good teeth - it is most likely worn out.
