I dont know what they do I read a little about it but didnt get into all of the details. the reasoning I think is the intake/ exhaust ports change velocities running backwards (velocity and compression create power) I will try to find a tech thread I read a long time ago about it and reply here for you

this is the good side

That's for sure. It seems that in those days, a TON of folks were definitely thinking outside the box on a regular basis.shawns fords wrote:yup its old skool, they did alot of cool things back in the old days and people are just now remembering
Things like Tommy Ivo's twin & four engined drag cars had to make more than a few people scratch their heads.

Guys like him were TRUE hotrodders...nothing like they are today. Today, guys like that are very few & far between, IMO.

The problem today is NHRA does not allow cars like these to make a single pass unless it is a special event, and even then they can not run their full capacity because they do not meet NHRA Safety Requirements. like no front brakes, chutes, etc etc etc. thankfully they do get to go to reuinion races and run then but if a guy was to just unload it off the track and enter super pro or super gas, they will turn him around and send him home LOL
those guys made the sport what it is today. lots of innovation and ideas that gave engineers something to work with.

Whatever the end results viability it looks absolutely freaking bitchin! I grew up reading Hot Rods, Motor trends, etc. that were back from the 50s, forever tilted my brain. After all for what I have in my front end on my truck to keep my old school straight axle and get it to perform like I want I could have done a couple IFS conversions. Also my insistence on a Y block, if you remember when I went through my "engine choice of the week phase"? I really wanted a Y and was beginning to think I wouldn't find one. When I am done about my only concession to modern tech will be the disc brakes and the 5 speed OD tranny.

sadly they dont rule the drag strips anymore... BUT they are quite common place at the "tractor" pulls... They look more like monster trucks, with 5 or more engines sticking out...
I wonder how that guy with the 4 engine, 4wd could even see where he was going!!!! hahha smoke screen coming off both ends... looks blinding!

Re: reversed intake and exhaust
Yup back when studebaker was dominating Indy,( the 50s) I spent a lot of time in the IMS museum checking out all of them old cars, some real Ingenious ideas come from racing.Truckrat wrote:Guys, if you look back to Indy and Formula 1 racing from the late 50s and come forward into the 60s they were running V8 and V12 engines in this configuration. In the early to mid 60s about all of the Formula 1 race cars including Lotus, BRM, Brabham, and Ferrari ran engines with intakes on the sides of the head and the exhaust headers up on top between the heads. The early versions of the small block Fords (255 cubic inch) were running a special head (Gurney/Westlake) at Indy in rear engine cars. Before all of that the inline engines had been doing this for a long time. Ever seen a 270 cube Offenhauser 4 cylinder race engine? Those things are so awesome. On a turbo they were making at least double the cubes in horsepower way back in the late 50s. Truckrat

Heck, there's guys with 8 reciprocating engines on their pulling rigs and 4 or 5 Helicopter turboshafts. Only reason such things are allowed at the tractor pulls is that the rigs are at least tied down to the sled and don't go very fast. I prefer the superstock classes at the tractor pulls.blackagatha wrote:sadly they dont rule the drag strips anymore... BUT they are quite common place at the "tractor" pulls...
