The place to talk Slicks. All we ask is that discussion has something to do with slicks...

power assist to single I beam

Post by merc uni »

I have just finished puting 70 mustang power assist steering on my 62 Unibody .I had a machinist friend make a new drag link to accept the control valve and made a bracket bolted to the axle/spring U bolt to hold the fixed end of the ram. The other end is attatched to the tie rod.The pump came from a 78 or 79 F150. All rather generic Ford stuff. The valve and ram are in "as they came off the car"condition, but don't leak .
My problem is that it seems easier to turn the wheels right than left while the truck is stationary. There is also some chattering/steering wheel shake when turning the wheel right quickly.I have not driven down the road yet and am hoping some Ford guy will have some ideas. Thanks.

Hi. I'm a lurker who recently signed up. I'm a new guy. My oldest son has a slick, and my younger son has a '67 mustang with power steering we just re-built. I can see that system working well on a straight axle slick.
I think you have air in the system. Try lifting the front wheels, and turning the steering wheel lock to lock a few times. I think there's even a Ford standard proceedure for this. I'd like to know how this setup works out after you get the bugs worked out.
Good luck. Bert

I have thought of using this setup myself, found on lots of Fords so should be easy to find.
