My Slick and a bunch of my questions.

Post by cerealdaemon »

First off, I'm new to the board, but I'm liking what I see. I've got a '65 F-100 SWB Sidestep,

Image

So you know what it(and I) look like.

Now to the nitty gritty.

For all intents and purposes, this truck is stock from the factory, and thats both good and bad. It has the drum brakes front and rear, the single master cylinder, manual steering and a few other little quibbles. I'd like to address these issues and essentially modernize this truck while still keeping the slick look. The truck does not look exactly like it does in the pictures at this moment in time, it looks more like this.

Image

I've taken the bed off and am working on replumbing the brake lines, because I don't feel that the 43 year old steel lines are safe anymore. I won't drive the truck if I don't feel that its safe.

On to the drum brake issue, I'm fine with leaving the rear drums, but I want discs up front and a dual master cylinder. It is my understanding that many later model years brakes and cylinder will bolt right up, but what years exactly will do so?

What is the best most economical way of getting power steering for this?

Finally, I want to move the gas tank from behind the seat(no baffles either) to under the bed, reason again being safety and I'd like to use the space behind the seat. I've got in my head that I can do something like this with the gas tank.
Image
obviously this would require redoing the fuel lines and getting new sending unit/pump but what else would be required and what would be a good place to start looking for a gas tank that would fit my approximate need?

Below are a couple more pictures that I'm going to throw in for kicks and giggles. Tell me what you think would be a good couple of places to start doing some research/parts sourcing.

:welcome: That's a nice looking truck! Brakes are pretty easy and there are a couple different options for you. Just take a read through some threads in this forum that mention brakes. To sum it up though, you can swap disc brakes from a 67-79 truck or go with an aftermarket kit.

Basically the same thing (and caliper brackets) on a 61-64 Slick, (the Uni may look familiar).

Nice looking 66. If you check the VIN# I'm pretty sure you will find your truck is actually a 1966 model. Many early 66s are titled as 65s.
The modifications you are wanting to make are very common and you can find a wealth of information on 48-60 Ford truck web sights.
The tank from an early Mustang is a common choice in the area you have outlined. The rear crossmember will haft to be removed and reinstalled after the tank is set. It will fill from the center of the bed.
One bit of advice and opinion. I may take some heat for this. So here it is.
The original brake system in perfect order will be safer than the most up to date system poorly matched and set up. There is really no such thing as bolt on but these brake mods come pretty close. Make sure its done right and not a collection of parts from six different trucks slapped together incorrectly. Do your research and consult experts.
The very same can be said for the fuel system.
I can drive it home with one headlight.

Welcome to the club from the East Coast, most of your questions can be answered in the hints sect. I left mine fairly stock, tank and brakes and I'm completely happy with it.

Welcome to the club. wave.gif
I have essentially the same goals for my truck. Keep it 'vintage' because if I wanted a new truck, I'd just buy one. But, improve in the areas of safety and reliability (and a few nods towards comfort).
The brakes I have your answer on, as I've done it to mine and wrote a web site how-to to guide you through it! woohoo.gif

The gas tank has been done quite a few times by others. The Mustang tank conversion is the most common. Since you have a stepside, that makes the hole-in-the-floor filler pretty easy. I'm sure someone who has done it will chime in here. Not sure if anyone wrote a how-to on it or not. You may want to page through our "tips and tricks" section.
Power steering can be done but it's a bit more involved. If you have a column shifter I think it's a bit of a challenge. I've kept mine stock, retaining the big original steering wheel for leverage, greasing the snot out of the linkage and kingpins regularly and keeping the front tires inflated. Other than parking, it's not that bad.
Your truck looks like a solid foundation. You'll find it's easy to work on and most of the stuff is now available through suppliers. All it takes is time and money. boxing.gif

looks like you have a pretty decent truck to start with.
as previously stated all of the things you want to do have been done and theres plenty of pics and tech to help with.

most of those things are personal choices, some folks dont care for manual steering, drum brakes and the in cab tank, i have no problem with any of them and as long as they are kept in correct condition work properly.

Welcome from the west coast. I drove with the 4 wheel drums for years. They are fine if they are maintained. The gas tank is also a non issue as well in my opinion in terms of safety. I am moving mine for more leg room mainly. THere are two ways to go with disk brakes. THe first way is the expensive way and that is to go through a company like Master Power Brakes. All new parts and everything matched to work toghether. Manual disk fully assembled $900.00. Power disk $1200   . A good option if you don't have the resources or the patience to go junk yard diving. THe other option is to find a 71-79 ford 1/2 ton. Buy the whole truck if you have the room. Buy new rotors and use the calipers for cores. THis way you can pick off ALL the parts you need off the same vehicle from master cylinder to the spindles. Then you can sell off the parts you don't use. If done right you can essentially get all the parts for free this way after the sale of the rest of the truck. My neighbors and most likly my wife would kill me if I brought home another truck and dismantled it on my little 6000 foot lot in Kammiforna. This place is a huge wealth of information from people who have been there, done that and bought the tee shirt.
Cheers,
Jarrod

Welcome!!

Great looking truck there :D

Have you given any thought to leaving the truck manual?

Dual master cylinder is great, as well as redoing all the brake lines etc, but having driven my manual steering and braking truck for a year and a half now its really grown on me.

Nothing to break down at all, manual steering works perfectly fine and you get the authentic feel to the truck. I rarely anymore find myself in a situation where I'm wishing I had power sterring. In fact the only times might be parallel parking, which I dont do very often anyway.

The brake conversion I'd go with Jarrod on. Find a parts truck and jerk them off that. much cheaper than paying big bucks for a conversion kit.

Welcome,from southeast texas :!:

Nice trailer hitch did you build it or was allready there.
I've heard mustang two pot m/c is good up grade but never done it.
I'm glad you have a nice truck to start with. My 66 was a p.o.s. to
start with but now I have a p.o. j. With power rack pinion, power brakes, with disk, ford 300 six of course . I can't tell you what I did because I don't want to be laughed at to mutch, good luck.

With regards to the PS upgrade, as much as I love this site, our 67-71 friends have a wonderful reference that applies to your 66 as well.

www.fordification.com will give the straight story on the PS upgrade. There is a a very good FAQ on it over there. (And yes, to the basic question, the 65/66 and 67-71 share tons of driveline details -- that's why the usual powerbrake upgrade is just getting parts from them. Same applies to steering, more or less.

In terms of safety, there are two areas that I think ought to be fixed in any truck that ever hits the road -- the dual chamber master cylinder (remember that the manufacturers were required to switch by the feds) is issue #1. And then also, seat belts with shoulder belt is #2.

From a pure safety sake standpoint, these two rise to the top, IMHO.

And welcome from me as well!!!!
