Door latch adjustment needed?

Post by qwertyd10n »

Hey guys,

I've been able to drive my truck quite a bit this summer (what a monster that engine is!) and I've noticed a few things that bother me. One in particular is how the driver's side door squeaks and sounds like it's not closed properly when I'm driving over rough pavement. It always seems to be closed properly, but I'm wondering if the latch isn't working quite right or what??? Does anyone have any experience they could share with me or know of any good posts I could read on this subject?

Cheers,
Dion

Make certain the latch is fully engaged. Incorrect adjustment of the striker is often the problem. If the striker is worn, rotating it to a better position may help. If you can feel movement when grasping the handle without pushing the button, adjustment is required. If adjusting results in a recessing of the door vertical surfaces in relation to the cab, it is likely to be looseness or wear causing a " stackup of clearances". If no one part is excessively worn, adding a couple of rubber " bumpers" may lessen the rattling. Be sure to thoroughly check looseness; these old cabs can flex enough to spring a partially latched door open while driving.

Are you sure its the door? You might need some new anti-rattle kits for the windows.

Thanks for the responses guys... yes, it needs new door rubber and an anti-rattle kit - all of which is sitting on the bench waiting for me to get around to it. I have the passenger door completely rebuilt and it's great, guess I really should jump into the driver's door.

However, I did lift the back corner of the door and there is definitely some play in the door hinge pins - especially the bottom one. How can these be "fixed" and where can I get parts as required?

If you have an old school Ford dealer they might have the pins other wise to the auto supply.

My Doors Were Loose & Sagging. I Got A Set Of Tight Lower Hinges (Used) From A Member. I Was Able To Remove & Replace The Lower Hinges Without Removing The Doors. The Hard Part Was Getting The Doors To Line Up Again, They Are Heavy & It Takes 2-People. Once The Doors Were Lined Up The Latch Was Adjusted. I Still Need New Rubber Seals But It's A Hell Of A Lot Better Than It Was. :)
