RUBY Gets A New Heart... and buddy

Post by CM Sackett »

Life happens to everyone (and everything). Suffice it to say, there has been a lot happen in the last month... but it's all 'ending' well.

1. RUBY's 429 got overrun by the high-dollar electric fuel delivery system the previous owner installed (without a pressure regulator...). The block and other major components were fine, but she needed an immediate reman. So, we did. And while we (mainly my friend, LARRY HAMMOND... a phenomenal ol' school FORD racing mechanic) were at it, we went the extra mile, put in all the GOOD STUFF (the receipts from SUMMIT are proof, LOL!), and LARRY worked magic with the tolerances, build, balance, etc.

As of a couple hours ago, here is RUBY'S NEW HEART...

...and 2. She got a new buddy to trailer around the nation to jobs.

Meet ANNE (she reminds me of Anne Margaret, a shapely, feisty redhead)...

THE INTERNALS...

* TRW 10:1 forged pistons (final compression worked out to 10:3:1
* Speed Pro moly rings
* COMP CAM 170H cam/lifter/spring set
* CLOYS double-roller timing chain set (for 429...)
* Forged crank turned 10 degrees... each block bearing journal finish bored/honed to give .002 clearance
* Block bored .030 (and each cylinder finish-bored/honed to match each piston, with .004 overall clearance
* Top of block valley scored and oiling holes chamfered and smoothed, for faster/better oil return
* Cam under single-spring load for break-in (per COMP CAM's suggestion)... ran 30 min., rest of the springs installed
* High-volume oil and water pumps installed
* New high-volume MECHANICAL fuel pump installed (good riddance, you expensive... WORTHLESS electric system!)
* New high-torque starter

ON TOP...

* New EDELBROCK Performer intake
* New EDELBROCK 750 "Elite" series carb w/electric choke
* New SUMMIT HEI distributor (GM-style w/internal module)
* New BLUE THUNDER "Cobra 429" finned aluminum valve covers
* New billet aluminum finned breather w/K&N element
* New MSD spark 'brain' w/rev limiter

Overall, lost around 50lbs weight in finished engine setup -vs- original setup.

Headed back in the morning to begin the install into RUBY (have to be on the road to Iowa on Saturday, for my next project). It's a good thing I'll have the bike/trailer behind her... for the "break in" drive, LOL!

HAH! You got that right, my friend!

I was NOT intending on doing anything like this... for another 100K miles (the engine, that is).

I'm just glad I get back to work Monday (5-7 months straight... from Iowa, to Kansas, to Nebraska, to California -Martinez- to finish out the year).

Good looking engine and Bike. The truck shouldn't have any problems towing a trailer with the bike on it.
Let us know how it all works out. :D

Hey Kevin, good to see ya.

First, thanks. MAN, I LOVE YOUR AVATAR TRUCK! (always wanted a 'Linc' hoodlatch setup... just never took the time to adapt the one I scavenged from a '63)

Again, thanks for posting up.

CM you can have one of those fancy hood latch setups and I am sure it will cost alot less than that overhaul cost :D. You see Kevin makes them himself and even has them for sale down in the parts for sale section . I must say it is quite a nice setup even Uncle Skip had to have one for Nadine and he does top notch work on his own :D.

Thanks Rick. Funny you should mention Kevin's (didn't know he made them to sell...). I just spent almost an hour going through his fantastic build thread.

I do have these available. I keep them in stock and ready to go. I have 4 left at this time but I am in the process of getting another batch cut right now. If you know anybody that needs one, send them my way.
We have another project started for my son and we are documenting this one from the beginning.

Thanks for the update, Kevin.

If I wasn't running like a madman, working with Larry to get the engine completed and in the truck by tomorrow evening (a few "minor" setbacks... wrong water pump -too long for serpentine system-. brand new Edelbrock carb is getting disassembled tonight... to find out why it's sticking/flooding, etc.), and heading out for work early Saturday morning... I'd be ringing you for one right now.

If you still have some come my winter lay-off, I'll give a ring.

PS:
We did get her fired up. Ran for 20 minutes, to break in the cam. Tonight, Larry will install the new valve springs and get her ready for tomorrow.

I video'd the start up on my Galaxy - just have NO IDEA how to get it from my phone to Youtube. But she sounds WONDERFUL! :wink:

Dang that looks good and bet it runs well. Sure wish I went bigger in Tweety instead of a 302.
