well i was sitting there just trying to think what i could do to fix my comfort zone (steering wheel belly rub) and all of a sudden a light bulb popped on.. some of you wont like this but the looks has grown on me and it will make a great conversation piece at shows lol check it out.. as for my blinker switch im gonna cut it off to where its about 3"s long it will clear no problem..

and i also replaced the front coils on the truck this week end to it drives mucho better and smoother, also worked on the rear end a little while trying to get it smothed out somewhat...

then i inherited a old egg smoker from japan from my aunt so i cooked burgers and called it a day!!

just remember without that wheel to crumple, in a wreck youre going to straight up skewer yourself on the steering column

I think a early Mustang wheel is 3" smaller diameter, thats what I want to try out.

Now you will have leg rub. The only solution for someone of your size is a shortened tilt column with a smaller wheel and power steering. Seats without the slider will also help. Stretching the cab about 3 inches would also help but that is a lot of work. Or how about a nice CC. IMHO!

well as for leg rub no i dont have any leg rubb, it fits perfectly im comfortable in it. and i dont have to butcher my column so im happy. i would like to find a flat steering wheel about the same diameter, that would look a little better, and as for the fire being to hot yes i know i just lit my charcoal so it hasnt flamed down yet.... geez bunch of criticizers.... :?

Those ceramic cookers are awesome! You can use half the amount of charcoal as a regular pit and that thing will stay warm enough to cook on three times longer. Big Green Egg is hugely popular but chaaaa-ching!! They cost some dough.

Just got through cutting 4 inches out of my column, using a 72 column in my truck. Really wasn't hard, just had to disassemble and cut the shift tube and weld, same on the outer tube. The steering shaft I was able to remove the end from the shaft that bolts to the steering box and drill it out to fit over the shortened shaft then wire welded it on the outside and inside for a solid fit. Think this will be the right fit for our small cabs.

I think 4 inches out of the column is a bit too much. I take 2" out of the column and 2.5 out of the shaft. But the process you used is the same way I do it. I drill the spot welds and remove the dash clamp and put it back on last. I saw off the steering shaft 2.5 inches at the bottom and grind it to fit a DD ford spline Borgeson anti vibration joint. Flat 14" steering wheel from ebay and your in business.

The problem with just shortening the column is it puts the wheel down on your legs, go on!, ask me how I know!!, the best way is to use a tilt column, I used a 28" flaming river column and it is great!

Alan, very nice! What did you use to connect the gear box to the column? I tell mine that "If you tell someone something they already know, more than three times that qualifies as Bitching". IMHO!

What front coils did you use?

Summit sells a set for 65-79 F 100/150 trucks for under $100.

That was my plan when I do the front end.

Having the wheel on my legs was the reason I want to try a 65-66 Mustang wheel. Im looking for a Mustang guy that has a spare so I can compare them.

William, do you mean the steering box?, if so, I cut the end off a standard Slick column with the rag joint, and had a double D machined into the shaft and it slides inside the FR column, like a slip joint!

Thanks Alan. I do the DD on the steering shaft and then use a Borgeson joint with Ford splines. Cheap and easy. My machinist is a 4" grinder with lots of grind/check, grind/check again. Again, nice work.
