Made a decision to get on with it

Post by unibody madness »

I was reading a hotrod mag at work, about a guy that spent so much time and effort on his build, that after he got tired of trailering it to shows, he parked it in his living room.

I have been at a stand still on the turk, wanting my ride to be perfect. Rather than doing just that, the decision was made to get it back together and running, so I can enjoy it, then slowly work on cleaning up the body work. So I was rather busy today putting the Turk back on its frame.

Make sense?

Been walking into the garage about every half hour just to stare at it. :D

Yep, makes perfect sense to me!

I also like the simple & "easily assembled" dolly rack to move the body with. Too cool!

I've got to ask -- what do you do with the square & tappered-top 'stanchion base anchors' visible in your pics???

Sure does make sense! I've been out of my '66 "Shoestring" for almost two years. Can't stand it, if I have to put a temporary FE in it I'm going to have it back in operation by April. Got to have a demo rig for my headliners, I've had that truck for 27 years, I've never been ashamed of it, people always ask if it's for sale, they must like it too! Drive the wheels off that, as you guys call them, UNI.

Thanks guys.
The body has been outside on that rack for quite some time. I got out of bed this morning and walked into the garage to look at it!!!
The rack is bolted at the corners and the c camps where there for piece of mind.
The tapered blocks where used under the trailer jacks in order to get the chassis back under. Here is a pic from when I took the body off.

John
yes that makes a lot of sense

i doubt my truck will ever be perfect but the ability to use it every day trumps that.

Thanks guys, I actually have the swb 223 up at the country that I use when i am up there as a work truck, and the lwb I make pretend I am selling gets a local workout when I get the itch, but the turk has been the project I wanted to use as a d/d.
I just can't afford the prices for body work, and before it gets fubared I will drive it as is, it's a real solid truck.
I did get an offer from one of our members to help with body work so maybe there is hope.

John,
The truck needs bodywork???? Looks good to me as is. Good luck and let me know if you need any parts to get it running.

Rick, think of the handling when your done

Will do Richard. Part of the problem is making room for all the parts I do have.. It does have some healthy dents, no rot, if I could get a real body man to help remove the worse I would just polish and wax it & leave well enough alone.

Well off to the garage to start some assembly before the super bowl!

You got the frame part done and the engine/trans.

Put it together, drive it for a while, fall back in love. Then when you get the itch you can take the body back off and do that part.

makes :2cents: to me, but that doesn't matter, what matters is if it makes :2cents: to YOU.

Have FUN with it, otherwise, what's the point! 8)

At some point, no matter how bad you want it perfect, you have to stand back and say "that's enough." I think you're going to be a much happier man doing it this way. Daryl, are you paying attention? :D
I'm not arguing with you. I'm just explaining why I'm right.

Skip did you read that before you hit submit :D . Seems I recall a slick in Texas that was road worthy many moons ago and I dont remember seeing any road shots of it in a while :D.

Thanks guys.
Bottom line the body and original paint will hopefully look good enough for the short term, its only original once and so far nothing has been done to the truck that cant be easily reversed
I spent my off hours cutting and fitting the heim joints and shaft extenders, only to find I may have to r and r the steering box I then finished a special steering wheel modification that I will post when assembled.

Man, that has been my biggest set back I cant go without driving mine for to long. I've been working on mine for 9 years and just last month took my cab off and undercoated it and coated the frame. I almost went nuts before I got it going again....LOL

I finally decided on mine that I was going to drive it and not sweat the little things, so I set a new timeline, and stuck to it. After I painted I found small issues, but honestly, by shooting for a 95 percent finish, I am now 100 percent happy ;)
If that makes any sense.
