Hood Hinges

Post by GJ1963 »

I have read through several threads here regarding hinges and tried the suggestions. Wondering if my hinges are OK. Putting the hood down is a multi step process. Go from side to side and push each side down, finally get it to latch up front and then go back and forth to each side pushing down. Then it still sits up at least an inch at the back, and once driving it rises some more. Are these hinges ok or should I be looking for new? It looks like an alignment pin in the middle is broken? Been watching the junkyard, but only two have gone through since I have had this truck, and the hinges were gone before I could get them.

Your hinges are toast.... they do sell reproductions, but from what i understand originals are better (if you can find good ones)

Sorry buddy, those are toast.

You might be able to bend them back, but it would be a lot of work.

There are people that rebuild the original. Check in Hemmings news magazine for people that do that. If yours are bent they may not be able to repair them. If my memory serves me correct there are some members on other ford sites that repair them with new pins etc

Thank you all for the responses. I figured they were bad but wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong with adjustment. This forum is great :P

I had the same problem and did mine alot of good by taking the springs off and welding on the big brads on the side that looks like a nail head. I used a rod welder and got them real red hot. While they were red hot put them on the end of a sledge hammer and used a pin from a tractor implement and another sledge and whammed down real hard on the other side. It tightened them up. However this is a two man job and I guess you could grind the weld and make them look better but they turned out kinda ugly but it worked.

Thanks to Darren, my truck looks a lot better now. He sent me a set of good used hinges, and what a difference. Mine did have broken locating pins. They did not articulate at all. Used to take 5 minutes to close the hood, pushing it one way or another. Now the hood sits right and closes in one complete smooth motion. I even fixed the safety catch which had been badly bent and had to be manually pushed into place. Here is how it looked when I got it:

How it looked once I had the hood pushed into placed and how it has been since I have been driving it:

....And how it looks now.

Thanks again!
