Bronco II Gas tank swap?

Post by dotcentral »

Thought there was a write up on a bronco II tank swap. I see the mustang gas tank article, but more interested in the Bronco II for the in tank pump.

Use the search function, and paste in bronco+II+tank

there will be a bunch of results, a quick scan looks like Skip, PFM & puggsly have been there :)

or maybe this will work?

search.php?keywords=bronco%2BII%2Btank& ... mit=Search

I have done 2 of them now. If I can help let me know I don't think there is a full write up on it. If your willing to do the write I think it is a good time. :)

Thanks Chris. Trying to decide, I would like to get the tank out of the cab, but I might cheap out and just use the incab tank. Probably best to use all new parts.

Parts List:
Gas Tank
In tank fuel pump
Sending unit
Fuel line
Fuel filler door
Vented gas cap
Fuel filler hose
Mounting straps

Anything I'm leaving out?

I have a filler door off a 80's ranger.
If I do the swap, I will try to do a write up.

I have seen both of Chris's tank swaps and it is pretty simple.
I want to do one under the bed of my 57 since I already have the in tank pump.
There was a good deal on tanks on Ebay a while ago. I need to check on it.
They hold 23 gallons, so you can go a while longer between fill ups. TR

That sounds about right you might throw in some flat stock to extend the mounting straps or just make new ones. The good thing is the sending unit and Fuel pump are the same unit. If you run carb make sure you get the pump for carb not efi. :) Speedway motors has some nice alum fuel line. A roll of 20' runs you about $15 or the 30' roll for a couple bucks more. I normally use the 3/8 line and just bend it by hand.

You might also check out my build thread for another thought on fuel filler.

Thanks for the link Chris. I have been through your thread. I am using a 5.0 EFI/HO out of a 91 T-bird, so shouldn't be a fuel pump on the block. Did you mount a fuel cutoff switch, or whatever it's called. Thing that shuts off fuel in case of an accident? By the way, how wide are those tank mounting straps? Might make more sense to make my own.

To all that have done this swap, did you use any used parts? I was doing some shopping, I can get a new tank cheap ($60-80 depending on brand) assuming those brands are decent. The filler hose is almost as much as the cheaper tanks. I hate to cheap out, but pretty sure I can get a filler hose somewhere for less than $40. Is there a Napa or some other vendor filler hose that works decent for our trucks? Then maybe get the gas cap "assembly" used and mount to filler hose - Or do these gas caps mount differently than the ones for the old style filler hoses?

Anyone mount a Bronco skid plate under your tank? I had a 83 Bronco II and it had a skidplate ubder the tank.

The straps are about 1 to 2 inches. I will have to measure this weekend to be sure. In my 64 I do have a fuel cut off switch. I grabbed it out of some ford truck in the bone yard. It will cut off the fuel pump if you hit something hard or it hits you. I mounted it inside the cab on passenger side just under my air vent. I will be mounting one in the Crew cab but need to grab another from the bone yard.

I never took the time to get the skip plate mounted on mine it can be done but didn't think it was really needed for my trucks. As for used parts my 64 has a used tank out of the bone yard. It was a clean tank and no holes, most of the time the yards punch holes in the tanks.. you might be able to get a filler hose setup from a bone yard but I suggest looking at the bigger trucks :) the filler tank hole is about 2 3/8inch.

I grabbed the fuel cut off switch from the donor T-bird, so I should be okay with that. Unless I decide to slam my truck I should be okay without a skid plate, just curious if anyone has used one.

I am planning on buy a new tank, they seem cheap enough. No one seems to make a new fuel filler, saw a used one on ebay for $70, so was going to look for a used bronco II or ranger - figuring they should be the same or similar. I could use a generic smooth or flex, but they don't have the air vent lines, least not the ones I'm finding.

I guess once I order the tank and it arrives I can measure the grooves in the tank where the strap goes and get the width.

Just what I need, a larger tank... I can't afford to fill the one I have now

Found someone parting out a Bronco II about 2 hours away. Parts are listed cheap and supposedly nearly new tank w/ filler, but looking at a 200+ mile round trip. Guess I'll call the guy. If parts are already pulled, probably worth my time & gas to make the drive.

Picked up a used gas tank, sending unit + internal fuel pump, mounting straps, & fuel filler neck today. All but the filler neck were used for less than a year before the B-II was scrapped. Everything looked clean and neat with the parts.

I already have a mid 80's Ranger filler door & gas cap. Not sure if gas cap size or diameter will match the filler hose, but probably easier to find a new gas cap than a filler hose. I have a fuel cutoff switch I saved from the T-Bird.

Questions

Will I need a second fuel pump? Guessing I will, mount outside of but close to the fuel tank?

What are good size fuel lines to run on a 220 Horse +/- EFI setup? 3/8" supply and 5/16" return? I would make most of those hard lines. Actually, my original gas line is 3/8".

I can answer the questions. :)

I only run the internal fuel pump (EFI pressure) and does not have a problem on my trucks. (I know some of the internal fuel pumps were carb pressurse but if the truck orginally had EFI your are good). I have only used the one for both my trucks and dave has done the same for his.

I ran all 3/8 alum line for main and return (got it from speedwaymotors.com). It might be bigger than needed but I rather have reserve.

Hope this helps.

Hey Monkey! When u put the tank n yur shortbed didnt it hang down below the rearend? I went and got a tank but didnt like how it was lower than my rearend pumpkin. Didnt think it was too safe. Decided to with the Mustang tank. Its alot thinner and doesnt go below the rearend. Espesially (I know thats wrong) on a lowered truck. LEE

Mine don't hang that low. It does kinda hang below the top of the pumkin but for sure not below. I was looking for a good picture of this and below is about the best one I can find at this time. Hopefully it helps.

Chris, how did you connect the fuel "supply line to the tank, AN fittings? Same question at the engine end? How about return line connections?

What is your height at top of tank to top of frame rails? I am thinking having the tank 1/2"-1" below the top of frame. Between that and the bed crossmembers, should be enough room. I figure I will have to drop the tank for any serious repairs; future fuel pump or sending unit replacement, etc.

Thanks for any feedback.

This is where I got the EFI to AN fittings. At least to get the correct part numbers. :) http://www.russellperformance.com/mc/ad ... -efi.shtml I can't remember all the sizes but ford is fairly standard in size. The AN fittings made things a lot easier.

"What is your height at top of tank to top of frame rails?" = I ran a flat stock bars at the top of the frame so the tank is all the way up to the flat stock. still pleanty of room between there and the bed. Here is a picture if it helps.

Thanks Chris.

I ordered fuel line, will try and get the AN fittings locally. Need to get something to put between the metal mounting straps and the gas tank. Are those anything special, or will pretty much any decent rubber product work?

Got the crossmember out, trimmed it down a bit, treated the rust, and painted it. Hope to get the the bed portion of the frame treated and painted this week. Still need to work out my tank supports but hoping things move a little faster the rest of the way.

Lost most of my progress photos when my laptop got some malware on it.

I don't think anything is really needed cause I never saw any factory one with anything. That being said if you want to put something just about and decent rubber product will work. On the crewcab I used leaf spring insulator I had laying around. :) Can't wait to see your progress. That darn malware.
