Slick 60's

Howdy guys I got a few questions about what its gonna be like daily driving my 66 and what kinda mpg I can expect out of it.I use to daily drive a 70 F100 so i know how drum brakes handle in traffic but I was wondering how will my 240 and three on the tree combo d be in traffic and I travel a 2 lane blacktop 46mi everyday to visit my girlfriend and newborn child how will the truck do in the hills cause theres a few good sized ones along the way and a couple curves....also anyone have any expirence with car seats and slicks cause as of dec 5th im a dad of a little boy...any expirence with daily driving a slick will be greatly apperciated!

Congratulations on the new baby. Driving a six stick will not be to painful in the gas department. just keep it tuned, tires inflated, no extra stuff in the back and drive like you have an egg between your foot and the go pedal. Course a honda would get better mileage but not nearly as much fun.

be to bad of a driver... back many years ago I had a 67 bump with the 240 3 speed and it did great... I rebuilt the engine and had to take it 60 over on all cylinders... still went back with "original" stuff.. (if that's what you call it) nothing fancy and still used the single barrel carb. I traveled 4 hour drives back home on every other weekend and got close to 27 mpg. this was four lane interstate but plenty of hills... as far as seat belts go... make sure your seat is stationary or locks in the upright position and add a center belt... this is how I brought my daughter home from the hospital when she was born...(back in '89) like I said, the bump was many years ago.. ... any way you look at it... if you can handle 20-25 mpg, then you have one of the coolest rides in town... I drive my 144 I6 Econo with a 3 speed 12 miles one way to work every day and it is a couple big hills and stop and go "in-town" traffic... I get 15-17 out of it and I am tickled pink... enjoy the ride and "Fix-Em-2-Drive-Em"!!!!!

thanks for the input..as far as i can tell my truck has 40k orignal miles on it but while i was sound deadoning i added a center seat belt and thats great on the gas milage part heck that aint much less than my 00 ranger i'm driving right now...i was just mainly worried how the 240 would do in the hills. 144? Really that's what my other project has in it

My 66 lwb with a 300 3 speed and 3:70 gears I get 16 MPG if I drive it in stop and go traffic it is a bit less.

Who cares about the MPG's! DRIIIIIIIVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's the fun about the hobby. Nobody gets the MPG's they want. Remember....."Real Hot Rods Have 8 Spark Plugs"!!!!!!!!!!!

I have brake checked my slick with my daughter lap belted into a car seat in both seat positions (center & passenger). She did well in both cases; however, she and my wife fight over who will get the center....

My daughter will choose Bluebird as her choice of transport any day of the week. You guys (and gals) just don't know how happy that makes me!!!

I dirve my 66 shortbed every day. This is my fishin truck , beaten around truck, and I enjoy driving it. It's not pretty, but when I go fishin, I don't have to worry about tree branches, thorrn bushes and other things scraping the paint. Get's me there and back most times, and damned quick when needed. Could use a brake upgradeto discs on the front, but can't complain about how it hauls A&&.
