Super Duty in my local junkyard

Post by DV65CustomCab »

A new arrival at the local salvage yard is a Slick era Super Duty fuel oil delivery truck, complete and sorta running. The yard got it given to them for scrap and it's scheduled for crushing. I didn't know if anyone (Michelle?) would be interested in anything off of it, or the whole truck. Sorry I don't have a photo but this is the body style truck:

It's got a pretty good cab with steps, uncut dash with no radio ever, just a little rain gutter rust starting. Fenders are rotted, doors aren't really good, hood is a little rusty but useable. Air brake equipped. Someone stuck a new Holley 4v on it to try to get it to run. I'm pretty friendly with the yard owners so if there is something of value there or you want the rig I can put you in touch.

I would love to get the small hood scoop and hood emblems/badges. They would go great on my project

This one is not equipped with the scoop. The only badges are on the hood at the rear sides and they look like the regular pickup shield for 61-64 with a faded insert. It doesn't actually say "Super Duty" anywhere but it's the model shown in the photo above, not a Big Slick. The cab to me looks like standard early pickup style, I did look at the roof gutter area for rust and it appeared to me to be 'normal' height(?).

I don't think there is anything I need off it. You may want to get the tach out of it. It is probably a four grand tach and can be used in a pickup with a distributor with a tach drive. The tach drive distributors are easy to come by, they are pretty common in F 600's with FE engines.

If it doesnt have the Super Duty emblems, it is a 64 or 65 F 800.

FE distributors with a tach drive are hard to come by and Ford never used them. They also never used FE engines in any truck larger than an F350. The larger trucks use an FT engine and although it looks similar it is different and the distributor from an FT will not fit in an FE (the shaft is much larger as is the oil pump drive shaft). To use the tach you will need an aftermarket distributor with a tach drive and even those are pretty uncommon. Hawkrod

I stand corrected. I never knew the FT distributor would not fit an FE engine. My F 600 has a tach drive, but then of course it is an FT engine. BTW when I was refering to the FE engine I was lumping the FT in with it, not knowing the distributors were different.

Here is a question for you Hawk. I have changed out the shafts of distributors before. Could one install a shaft from a FE distributor into that of a FT distributor housing?

The FT's have a much larger shaft so it would not fit in an FE housing or vice versa. There are some FT's and FE's that have basically the same housing but the ones assembled for an FT have a bigger diameter bushing. BTW, there are a ton of other significant differences between an FE and an FT. The blocks can be swapped with minor work but beyond that any swapping requires a lot. For example if you want to use an FE intake on an FT you also have to change the heads and exhaust manifolds! Hawkrod
