I almost did myself in today!

Post by Gritsngumbo »

Don't know about where you live but it's gotten darned hot here in Louisiana. Ninety Five this afternoon with a heat index of 99 or so.
I'm trying to get the front of my 63 Uni torn apart so I can pull, clean up and paint the engine and engine bay and install front disc brakes and mono leafs and put a T5 behind the Y-Block.
Decided to try to finish up dropping the driveshaft and take the last couple of bolts out of the bell housing mounts today. Although I had box fans blowing on me from the front and back of the truck the heat got to me, felt really sick and had to go in and lie down for a while. 99 degree heat index is too much to work under a slick, at least for this old man. I've got to discipline myself to get up early and do what I can before it starts getting hot about 10 am.

I here ya man.. I worked half a day on my boat trailer stripping it down and only could get half of it back painted.... I was soaked from head to toe. My Malaysian neighbor came out and said.. ooo josh you wowk too haad.. too haad.. Im a former Springhill Louisiana guy.. I know what your dealing with.. here in Central Arkansas it wasnt quite as bad.. but wasnt much better. take care of yourself.. looks like its gonna be a hot one....

Im dreading saturday... Im finishing the body work on the interior of the truck and priming and hopefully painting.. Im definitely bringing over the big fans.. nothing like cooking in a giant tin can. . Im starting at 6:30.. and quitting around 2 or 3... no way im staying in the afternoon.

i have been without a/c in my work truck all year so far. drinking about 200oz of water a day and trying to stay in the breeze when sitting. it's not too bad when driving, but still sucks.

We also have the blast furnace turned up to 130% around here. We have been lucky the last few summers and had it easy.

I worked 3 days in the shop this past weekend. I think I drank over gal of tea plus water. I had all the fans going and it was still 100 outside and 100 inside the shop. Lots of breaks. Good thing is inside the shop it is shade or I would of quite early on. It will be fun when I go to paint this weekend. I will for sure be taking a shower inside the bunny suit. :D

Being active in heat like that requires gallons of water. As long as you stay hydrated, you should be alright. Here in Atlanta, when I plan a day trip to a junk yard, I bring a case of bottled water or several gallon jugs and it'll be mostly gone by the end of the day.

I've experienced the other extreme, mild hypothermia.

Same down south - getting hotter already. This past weekend was brutal at times, but I was either doing yard work or out on a tarmac. As long as there is a breeze, it's somewhat better but the sun is already extremely hot and it's not even 'summer' yet.

I'm having to take parts out on the driveway to sand so I don't coat the garage with dust and am doing this in the evenings when it starts to cool. 5 minutes and I'm soaking wet already and that's at 5 pm.

Definitely need to keep drinking water, and tons of it or you'll most certainly do yourself in.

I'm in the same boat as hungrymonkey. Today is the first substantial sun I've seen in a month. I don't have any cement to park the truck on while I work on it so Ive spent the last three weekends crawling around in the mud.

yeah i use to work on a shrimp boat in louisiana in this stuff all summer long....no ac and covered in dead fish, shrimp, catfish going through fingers, sting rays, crabs, hell sharks on the deck pissed off, and working 20 something hours straight...love that new orleans heat....

Also, drink lots of water but replinish the minerals. When I was in the army there was a case of someone dying from TOO much water. He deplinished himself with too much water.

Another side note, Im a dog lover and imagine how they feel with assh*le owners who leave them tied up all day. Their bodies are 10 degrees hotter than ours so...95 to us is 105 to them.

We here in Central Texas have been feeling the heat too. Except for today, the highs were in the mid 70's today. It has rained all day here. As soon as it quits raining it will be hot once again and with all the rain we had today it will be humid for a few days. Today was a great day for working on the slick. I just came in about 8:30, wanted to get all the cool in I could.

I worked in pretty serious heat back when I drove a recycle truck.
It had a air leak from the engine compartment, no A/C so it got to about 125 in the cab in the summer. Gatorade or Powerade - the stuff really helps.

Glad to hear you are fine Grits.... It has been running in the upper 80's around hear with what they call the real feel at about 93 to 98. (this takes into consideration the humidity and temp.) Keep hydrated and take alot of breaks....

Thanks guys. Things were a little cooler today and cloudy with a couple of brief showers. 79 degrees and 79 percent humidity at 7:00 am. I drink lots of Gatorade to keep hydrated, but I guess things just caught up with me. Today I concentrated on things i could do without getting under the slick.
It's pretty nice out now, 79 degrees with a light misting rain. Would be good working weather if it wasn't for the skeeters, you know, the Louisiana National Bird :-)
