Slick 60's

For the first time in years, my wrench slipped off the nut and crushed my figernail between it and a large, improperly named heavy piece of steel on my truck.
I have a very flat, very sore finger as a result.
Its still weeping blood under the front of the nail, but at least it isn't building up pressure under it.
Did I mention that the air turned the most beautiful shade of Ford blue about the time of the incident.
Typing with one hand sucks.
I have to go take some more aspirin.

I nailed one of my fingers this weekend too. I was using a tailpipe expander on a good muffler I gave to a buddy. The expander stuck and the bolt just tried to climb out. I knew a 3 lb hand sledge would get it out. I likely should not have held onto the expander while I smacked it though, lol. It pinched my finger between the pipe and the expander so hard it kind of exploded. The whole finger print was bruised, still about 3/4s that way, lol.

One more thing, it WAS NOT my Snap-on wrench that slipped.
It was one of those cheap ones you get in a tool set at Lowes. I know better than to use my junk yard set for real work.
Could there be a lesson here?
I think so.
Sucks being me, and I promise I'll quit whining about my finger now.

I like my Kobalt tools, lol. I don't have the cheaper ones from there though. I just forgot to use the tool between my ears, lol.

A year ago I was on blood thinner for a little heart problem at the time. I dropped a 32 gallon fuel cell in the race car and it didn't go all the way down into the mount. Like an idiot I just banged the top of the cell with my left hand and the only thing that kept it from hitting the floor was the "bird" on my right hand being under the mounting flange. I had a perfect imprint of the mounting hole drilled in the fuel cell retaining lip on my fingerprint and again on my nail. With the blood thinner my finger swelled more than I would have ever thought possible. Didn't break the skin but by morning my finger was almost half the size of my wrist and almost black. Real nice. It took forever to get it to stop bleeding and I still have a dent in my fingernail and a hard spot under the skin on my fingerprint.

Isn't it amazing what we will do for fun?

I found when I smash a finger or thumb I put direct pressure on it just like an open wound it cuts down on the swelling & a lot of the time won't leave a purple nail.

"Finger Nail Therapy" I think most of us have been there at some time to a greater or lesser degree. Used to do mine quite regularly while pretending to mechanic on construction equipment.

I am glad that all my tools have long handles so my hands and fingers are safe. I would be divistated if I broke a nail.

A lady was recently in my shop who was missing a thumb on her left hand.
She was feeding her horse treats and had gloves on. He bit her thumb off at the first joint.

Ouch, I wonder if she gets a discount when she gets her nails done? Which reminds me of another incident? I was keeping an exotic bird for a friend once and when I went to remove the bird from a perch to put him in his cage to go to bed, he seemed agitated so instead of using my finger, I used a large wooded spoon like the type you cook with, when I nudged him under his chest with it he promptly bit in two. I am just glad it was the spoon and not my finger.

I realize it has been a while, but an ice pack or running cold water over it immediately after the injury will lessen the bruising and keep it from being too bad. Also, don't take aspirin, it is a blood thinner. Ibuprofen will help more with the pain and inflammation.

A pair of needle nose, a red hot needle and a little push through the nail always took care of the pressure for me.

Met an old fellow at a antique farm machinery show and i made the comment that i never cared for horses, and he said I never owned a horse that didnt try to kill me at one time or another! Luckily I havent smashed any fingers lately but have had plenty of cuts and bruises form wrenches slipping. at my age my old hide isnt as tough as it used to be.
