bought this fine specimen after ss 08 with the intention of driving it to ss 2010.
$1500, 223 ,not supposed to run.
however i put a battery in it and it fired right up. whoever rebuilt the head did not put the rocker stands in the right spot so the head was not getting oil. replaced the whole rocker arm and it now gets oil but smokes.have another 223 to put in.
after i washed it

the other day i loaded up my replacement 223 and my engine stand and took them over to my friends shop.
upon disassembly found 1 bent pushrod, and sloppy timing chain.
going to do an overhaul of the head, ordered the timing set and new valve springs.
today i cleaned and bead blasted most everything i removed so far.
next time i go there will be taking the rest of the block apart to see if rings and bearings are needed, theres no noticeable ridge in the cylinders and nothing else appears loose or out of order but Iowa is a long ride and the block is on the engine stand inside so might as well look see now.
should get to doing the head in the next week or so as well.

before i got sick i took apart the entire engine, down to bare block.
everything looked real good mains and rods were fine, thrust brg was within tolerance so after cleaning up the crank started reassembly.
when i got to the pistons as i was removing the rings a couple of the oil control rings (the mesh part) came out in pieces so i had to special order a set of +.040.
engine is covered up on the stand waiting for me to get back and finish, hopefully next week i can start working on it again.
going to have to bust hard to get done and in before the winter comes.

That looks amazing. Just like new.
Brian will you tell me what set up equipment etc. you use to bead blast things? I would like to give it a whirl on some of my projects.
finally attacked the engine again. got all the pistons cleaned up, the new rings on and back in the bores and torqued down.
useing STP as an assembly lube.
left my new timing chain soaking in a butter container full of marvel mystery oil.
tomorrow i will put that, the cover, the oil pump and pan back on and paint the bottom end.

the container had the marvel in it from using it on the pistons and rings during assembly so i decided to toss the chain in before i left for the night, will be well lubricated for installation.
and it was.
got the chain installed, cleaned out the oil pump, dunked it in the above container and spun it with the distributor shaft for a few minutes.
got my oilpan and timing and side covers back on as well as the water pump.
then i dissassembled the head. next step will be refacing the valves.
