What is it

i have a 62 uni with 223 and 3spd man. on the driverside of engine attached to the block there is a breather looking thing with a wingnut in the middle and a big tube coming out and pointing down is this some kind of crank case breather it is towards the back of the motor i love old trucks and have don lots of mechanic work but not as familiar with the older stuff. im a new slick owner just bought the truck 2 weeks ago it runs but smokes a little. ant help would be greatly appreciated.

Road draft tube. The motion of the truck causes a flow out the tube, the breather on the valve cover allows air in and so the fumes are drawn off. Simple, but polluting.

it can be replaced with a pcv system quite easily.

Welcome to the group medic579.. You have found a home for you, your truck, and all your questions.. These guys and gals will steer you in the right direction but as for me, I stick mostly to the 300 and 240 sixes. Good luck and lets see those pics of that new slick in your family...

I would think you could go PCV system by removing the tube, and/or making some kind of cover to cap it off (seal it) at the rear of the block. Then modify your rocker cover to accept a PCV grommet. Then get a PCVvalve and a carb spacer with the big vacuum port, and connect it to the PCV.
Sounds like you might be getting some blowby past the rings. It might get better the more you run the engine.

It really only smokes on hard acceleration. It does not skip it cranks very easily barely turn the key and it fires riht up idles as long as you will let it it just smokes some. I'm sure there is some wear on the engine it's old but if I can curb the smoking that would be great.

I changed my road draft tube setup on my 223 over to PCV system some years ago, works very well and no smoke. I inverted the large part that is bolted to the block and adapted a hose to the center (filtered) of the air cleaner so that this portion would be the intake to the crankcase. Then I bought a oil filler cap to fit on the valve cover that had a hose spud (5/8 inch). from there, it goes to an inline PCV and the on into one of the ports in the center of the manifold below the carb.
