It was a a three speed on the column. It was moved to the floor. I intend on putting it back on the column.

Jacob, slow down a little that engine may be just fine.

Post by 64 litl un »

jacobd that engine may be fine. You can do some very simple things to evaluate it's status.
Step 1: Pull out all the spark plugs.
Step 2: Purchase some Marvel's Mystery Oil from your local parts store along with a oil squirt can. Motor oil will do but Marvel's is thin like a penetrating oil and is good for freeing rings.
Step 3: Squirt a little oil in each spark plug hole, about 3or4 pumps each.
Step 4: Let it set for a while allowing the oil to seep past the piston rings.
Step 5: Make sure truck is in neutral. The gear shift should be in the center of the pattern and have a good deal of free play.
Step 6: I believe 15/16 is the size for the damper or crankshaft pulley bolt. Any how it's the big pulley on the bottom front. Place your socket on the bolt and see if the engine will turn. It should turn with little effort. If it does not want to turn try adding more oil and working the crank back and fourth.
If it turns one way and refuses to go the other the starter bendix may be stuck. More than one good Ford engine and whole car or truck for that matter, has gone to the junkyard due to a stuck starter bendix.
Also when a straight shift sits for a while the clutch may rust to the flywheel not allowing the clutch to disengage when the pedal is mashed. You can check for a rusted clutch by having a helper in the cab mash the clutch while it is in gear. Then gently push the truck forward or backward a couple of feet. If the engine turns while in gear with the clutch mashed the clutch is stuck.
Getting back to the engine, If it turns over well by hand the next step is to crank it over with the battery.
I would hate to see you spend money at the machine shop when you may not have to.
more to come..
I can drive it home with one headlight.

After the engine is free and turns over by hand with ease you can do some very simple things to check the status of the engine.
Hook the starter back up. Make sure all loose naked wires like distributor, alternator and coil wires are taped up to prevent shorts.
Make sure truck is in neutral. lightly oil the cylinders. Chock wheels. Replace the dizzy and oil pump drive. The dizzy must be in place to engage the oil pump. Make sure the engine has oil.
Have a helper crank the truck with the key. Make sure the truck is in neutral and the clutch is depressed.
Place your finger in each spark plug hole just to seal it. As the engine is cranked over a healthy psssst of air should try to blow against your finger. If all 8 cylinders do this you have good compression and the engine should run.
I can drive it home with one headlight.

I was really hoping that by this time today I would be able to proudly post a photo of the opened up front end of the truck. Yeah, hope is all it was. I'm sitting here demoralized pecking away at these keys with fat, sore fingers, split open knuckles and raw palms. Teaching middle school is so much easier than this. I just show up each day and have fun with the kids and everything goes smoothly. But... I suppose that gets boring all the same.
I did have fun today regardless of not meeting my goal. I cut through a couple bolts with a sawzall and drilled through two screw heads. I tried using the extractor bits but they didn't work too well. Screws actually came out while drilling with the normal bit.
I took out every bolt I could find in the front end but two. There are these two bolts a few inches to the outside of the cab mounts that are so rusted they are nearly unrecognizable. Not only that but they look like they are going to be a nightmare to get at. Maybe I am just really tired and it will seem more feasible when I feel fresh. It was a wee bit hard today fighting back the urge to grab the grille and just tear it out.
It is funny, I go through moods with this truck where I ask myself what the hell am I doing? This isn't me. And I get frustrated with not having immediate success. This is without a doubt the most humbling thing I have ever attempted. Then I'll see a really beautiful old car out on the highway and think to myself, why can't I do it. I'm not in a race. I've learned so much already in such a short amount of time. All it takes is time and patience and the willingness to ask really sophomoric questions.
Then I laugh wondering what you all think of some of the simpleton crap I ask. I imagine it gets both annoying and entertaining laughing at me.
I read the missives here about neighbors having slicks and buds getting together to help out with builds and I make a complete inventory of all of my friends and not one of them is into cars or mechanical things at all. I guess I just grew up in a different world. Anyway I am trying to broaden my horizon. There is a local car club that has a first of the month show that I am excited about attending next weekend.
So, anyway, I worked hard today on my slick. I didn't get very far. It seems the slick is smarter than I am. I ordered a new tank and all the fuel system accutriments on Saturday morning for the dent. I will feel good about myself if I can install all of that on my own. As far as getting the front side off the slick, I'm stuck. I'll look for more bolts tomorrow after school.
I want everyone who has helped me get this far and has put up with my ignorance to know how much I appreciate your time and willingness to share your knowledge with me. It has made a difference. I sure hope I can create a nice looking slick that will make all proud.

Jacob, are you taking the whole front clip off!, or just the Grille? If it`s the latter, leave those bolts until you have the radiator support off! I think those bolts were some ones little joke on all of us!. I too don't have any friends that are into working on old cars, so it`s all left up to me, with the help of my friends here on Slicks. The guy`s in the hot rod club I belong to, I suspect they are cheque book rodders!
Honey, If I say I`ll fix something I will, there`s no need to remind me every 6 months!!

Your posts are entertaining to read and they paint a pretty clear picture, in words, of what you are going through. The cell phone pix are pretty good too. Your engine looks like a 289 or an early 302 judging by the placement of the dip stick in the front cover. These are pretty good engines and for their size can produce a good amount of power for a reasonable cost.
Keep asking questions and posting pictures and we will get you through this. You haven't given up yet so I would say with reasonable confidence that you can now be labeled as an official Slick A holic.

Opening the garage door primed to face my adversary I stood there aching from the lashing the beast had handed me the days before. Muscles in my neck, shoulders and back I didn’t even know I had were tied in knots the saltiest of sea dogs couldn’t unravel. I had been in the belly of this wicked beast just yesterday and here I stood waiting another trouncing. I have to admit my heart wasn’t in it today. Sure I had visions of glory in my head raising that grille triumphantly in the air for the world to see, or any piece of this snarling mass of metal which has been taunting me for that matter. The visions were there but the body wasn’t about to follow.
As the door opened there she stood hunched to one side on her flat tire. Her hood open like the huge jaws of a dragon poised to belch torrents of searing flame she mocked me and my futility. Her eyes gouged out from our skirmish the day prior a cold hearted steely gaze still found me; beckoned me; taunted me to try, just try and take her apart.
Image

I am not proud of what followed, not proud at all. See, I did something. See, I did something, well, I did something there yesterday. Well, I did something there yesterday in front of my garage that’s just not right. It’s just not right for a man to do what I did there yesterday in front of my garage. Maybe… Maybe I’m different from the rest; maybe there is something about me that just aint right. See, I ran. Yeah, I know what a disgrace. I ran away. There I said it. In the face of the vile beast I turned tail and slunk away with all the cowardice of a beaten dog. Tail between my legs, head hung low I ran to the comfort of the television and sulked there the rest of the night.
Ahh, yet there is hope. Hope still exists in my heart. Today the beating isn’t so fresh. Today the aches and pains aren’t so vivid. Today I can look to the future and face my foe yet again. I’ll stage a frontal assault on that heap of scrap iron today. Victory will be mine.
I wonder if there is anything good on the History Channel.

In my concerted efforts and pursuits to remove and replace, "idiot" from my project I have invested in automotive education coursework. I am thoroughly enjoying myself. At this stage of my adventure my knowledge level is doubling daily.
That's all.
