ABA,

Good luck with the intake. I have removed and replaced my share of FE Intakes. My Advice:
Make sure you drain the block of antifreeze.
Remove the hood from the truck.
RTV for the front and back seal.(Don't let it set up to long before you install the intake).
Don't forget the hose to the water pump when you put the new intake on.

What part of SC are you in. I may interested in some parts off your 69 when you part it out.

Thanks for the advice Jonas.

I'm in North Augusta, SC and it want be to long before I let the '69 go. There's not much left on it I can use on the '65, tailgate and my speakers mainly.
It still has the blown 460 in it and I would like to keep the C6 but money talks.

Well I got the 4V intake and a decent pair of chrome valve covers today for $45. 8)

What is the best way to clean that intake? It has a little bit of rust inside where the carb mounts up at.

Hi ABA, thanks for the welcome.

The only thing I am curling tonight is one pint light beer cans with beer in them of course, ha ha.....

I am here from the old Slick 60's Forum.

Uncle Skip lives close to me and also RatFinkMike and Bronco Tom, great People.

Uncle Skip told me about the old forums.

That manifold you purchased is a nice one.

Check this out.

http://www.network54.com/Forum/74182/me ... +Report+#3

This is credited to Jay brown who went to a lot of trouble to test all of these FE intakes.

Jay told me the early FE cast manifold makes within 10 HP of the Performer.

The performer and my early cast iron intake are similiar in dimensions.

The early cast iron might make more low rpm torque also.

The difference in weight is negligable except for lifting the thing!!!!!

80 lbs versus 24 lbs.

Before installing an FE intake, I check to see if the block has an alignment dowel in the drivers side front sealing ledge.

Also look to see if the intake has a maching groove to accept the dowel.

I put a small chain on two of the carburetor studs and 1 intake bolt in the second from the front passenger side intake bolt hole.

Next is putting the intake on the drivers side inner fender onto an old folded blanket

Then I set on the core support on the drivers side.
I put my left foot on the crossmember and my right foot on the drivers side engine mount.

Next I slide the manifold onto my right thigh.

Then I pray to whoever might be listening.

I put my left hand onto the passenger rocker shaft and grab the chain with my right hand.

Then I lift the intake over the engine and line the intake bolt protruding from the bottom of the intake up with the appropriate hole in the head and set it down.

Next I put the distributor without the rubber seal in and push it back and forth to till it is centered, this will align the intake so the distributor is not binding on the intake.

Next go the intake bolts.

I hope it is alright to post the link above, the guys over there are great like you guys here.

Regards.

Hey thanks for the info Richard. :D
It will be a few weeks before I install the intake. I'm going to make sure that engine is right and the truck is dependable first.
I did do a compression check and all 8 cylinders were in the 150lb range and it don't smoke a bit.
I just got to get it back on the road and drive it some.

I am glad the Galaxie it came off of wasn't on the back row of the salvage yard. Had to carry it out by the distribitor hole with one hand, tool bag in the other hand.
My helper had to work Sat. morning and I wasn't waiting around on him and take a chance on that car being crushed.

Ha ha, carrying one of those over ten feet with one hand is torture.

Also, if I remember correctly, it seems most of the plain iron intakes have smaller ports than the ports on the heads.

My Performer 390 intake had small ports.

Regards.

I thought thats why they made aluminum intakes...........Don't say the cast iron is cheaper until you pay all the medical bills for throwing your back out of whack.

No, never had back surgery and I worked in an industry for over 35 years where back problems were rampant. Must be a reason for that..............
