Steering Column Removal
I am removing the steering column from my 1964 f100 and am having problems figuring out how to disconnect it from the steering box. Can someone tell me how this is done. Thanks for all the help.

the steering column shaft and box are one piece.
the steering wheel, collar and outer tube can be removed and slid off inside the cab, to remove the rest you must
remove the pittman arm
remove the floor plate
remove the bracket holding the column tibe
disconnect the column wiring.
unbolt the gearbox from the frame and drop out the bottom.
you may or may not need to remove the oil filter and clutch linkage

Try pulling on it while twisting. If that doesn't work, see if you can get into a good position to pry it off of the box. There is a rubber thingy which fits pretty tight between the tube and gear box. Try to avoid prying to avoid damaging the rubber thing.

Now for a more serious reply...
To remove your steering column from the truck you will need to pull the steering wheel off, disconnect everything from the column, remove the pitman arm from outside the frame rail. unbolt the steering box from the frame. With all this done, drop the steering box down and slide the column up off the shaft.
Hope that helps.

How does dancing the twist help with removing the column.charliemccraney wrote:Try pulling on it while twisting. I can see that as an after-effect if you drop the whole dang thing on your foot.

Re: Removal of steering column
The rubber piece holds it pretty tight. I couldn't get it off just pulling so I twisted a little while pulling and the column came off - after loosening the bolts, disconnecting wires, and such. Don't know how else to explain it.MY OL 66 wrote:

I discussed it some in "hints and tricks" under the 73-77 turn signals thread.
