The place to talk Slicks. All we ask is that discussion has something to do with slicks...

It's a record! Well for me anyways...

Started at 6:30PM and engine was on the stand at 9:00PM.. So two and a half hours to get the engine out of the truck, all wires labeled and bolts bagged (to help make everything go back together smoother), tools almost put away, and removal of the oil pan.

My drain plug is stripped, and I have tried to put double sized plugs in and etc but it was too far gone. And the position of the drain plug hole is right on the cross member so you can't really get in there with a tap or anything... I am going to weld up the old hole and put a new one toward the back.

I also needed to replace my noisy throw out bearing so having the plug strip out was just the last excuse I needed to start in on pulling the engine.

So I am curious, what is your personal best for removing a motor **and** still having it usable? I know it's not best to rush these sort things, but for me anyway not being a professional mechanic having it done in the time I did was pretty cool.

thats not a bad time at all i pulled one at work the other day started at 8am and had the other motor in and the motor running before lunch but it was a 91 tacoma 4x4 with the 22re in it. with two people you can pick that motor up. but changeing one of these old trucks would have took longer v8 or striaght 6 is heavier that the foue banger we swapped

Two days for removing the entire front clip, taking the engine down to the block, replacing a rear main, installing a new T5 and putting everything back together. Then I hooked up my MSD dist incorrectly. It worked for a minute though!

Since you didn't narrow the question down to a Slick, I pulled the engine out of my 68 VW bug in about an hour, cleaned all the crud from the engine bay and engine and put it back in. Was driving again in about 3 1/2 hours.

I would regularly have bare long blocks sitting on the ground in the morning, pull a car in and swap in a long block with new oil pump, new hoses, new water pump, cap, rotor ,wires, t-stat, radiator R&R, new clutch or new converter seal and have the car ready for pick up by the customer at 5 p.m.

About 3 months ago I pulled a entire front clip, engine and trans, both doors, tailgate, and fuel tank from a donor '66. Took about 3 1/2 hours. Okay I had the help of a friend, but it only took 3 1/2 hours. I would say it probably would have taken at least 8 hours or more by myself.

I brought home a donor 78 ford and had the motor and tranny out in a little over an hour. Now the motor and tranny are usable, I didn't cut anything off of them, but I did cut off the front bumper, core support, and hood to make it go faster.
