Center console ideas

Post by f100matt »

I have started working on getting my 66' mustang buckets mounted in my slick and have been brainstorming ideas for a center console. I think i will probaly end up custom making one.I think i would install a new radio and some hidden speakers in it, cupholders and a storage compartment. Anyone built a custom console like that for their slick, have any ideas? I need all the help i can get 8)

Here is one that I did , came out of a late model Mustang, when I finished used the Mustang Hand Brake assembly, then also used the Mustang Shift Handle, also made a lower dash piece with my A/C Ducts in it to meet the front edge of the console and sitting on top of a steel box to raise it to meet lower dash,, I have one more idea kicking around have to take a picture in the daylight on a truck I have out here

Matt,
Well I am kinda leaning to a bench seat but buckets with a console is possible. I'm thinking about using a combination of plywood and aluminum. The top/horizontal part would be aluminum and the sides plywood. I think I will cut a groove about 1" down from the top of the plywood, cover the outsides with enough access material to overlap the inside groove, then press the aluminum into the groove for a nice finished look. If you look on Evilbay you should find some cup holder inserts. I think some nice old school speaker grills would look nice on the sides. I'm not really sure what to use for a compartment cover, maybe a aluminum locking fuel door. As far as the "tub" for the compartment maybe one of those plastic battery boxes, they come in all shapes and sizes.

One design feature that I plan to steel from my Firebird is to but power window switches in the console. Less wiring - only 2 switches instead of 3. Easier, possibly more reliable wiring since less of it has to go into the door and fewer switches. I haven't given too much thought to my console yet so I can't post much of a concept right now.

Merle's console was very nice. I remeber seeing it in person at SS03.. Here are some bigger pictures I took of it.

No idea. That pic was taken from an eGouge auction about a year ago.

I like the falcon consoles alot, and have been keeping my eyes open for one. If i do try and build a custom console i would like to make it look like it might have been something that would have been in it originaly, but that may be hard to do. I am getting a couple ideas from the pictures posted. i like the console that jwh-f100 posted...

-2003 Ford Ranger XL, 3.0, 5 speed
