66 FE auto tranny cooling system

Post by F-Zilla »

Back when I pulled my motor and tranny when I started my Slick dismantling I discovered a tranny cooling system I havn't run across yet. No lines from the tranny to the radiator, just a T in the lower hose that cycles coolant to a "pack" on the passenger side of the trans. Was this standard for slick autos? I feel when I put it back together that I should convert it to a radiator cooled system. Any comments?

Yes, this is how it was done. I switch out the system on my sons 66 with the auto by using two pre made 4' metal lines that I got at our local parts house. Using the short lines that came out of the trans we cannected the new lines with a double female connector and bent the new lines along the trans and engine up the the radiator. The old system was pluged and rotten. We used a radiator from a late 70's truck with a auto, or you can use a trans cooler.

Or you can use both an air flow cooler, and the radiator cooler [which is nothing more than a single line] acting as a heat exchange tube, in outlet side, tank, of a radiator.
Of course if you do not operate in Extremes such ATF cooling is not really necessary, IMHO.
