It's hard to see from that interior pic, but it sure looks like a bench seat to me. Besides, don't Rangers usually have the CC long speedo?
My "Slickitis" affliction began here...

Key word in your statement being "usually". Many things have turned up since the sixties that make us wonder. Had I ordered a Ranger, I would most certainly specify the Custom Cab package to go along with the Ranger package. Doesn't mean everyone did it that way. It's really fun to find some of these old trucks that we never thought existed.Slick Fan wrote:It's hard to see from that interior pic, but it sure looks like a bench seat to me. Hey, I have to agree and disagree! A heck of a lot of weird stuff has popped up lately but if you do the research you can see that it may be weird but that was the way it was. Ford had very specific protocals for ordering vehicles back then despite what many people think. It is pure fantasy to think that you could simply walk into a Ford dealer and wave money and get what you wanted. The reality is even many offered items were not available because the dealer did not know about it. In those days a special order was handled on a form. That form let the customer pick and choose. As long as the combination was available on the form then the vehicle got built. If it was not available on the form then a request was sent to the district office where it was reviewed and a determination was made. Those out of the ordinary requests were hand processed and rarely approved. When they were approved the vehicle would be built and would carry a special DSO number. First thing to look at on weird combo's is the DSO. If it is two digits and it was not an available combination then the seller is FOS (such as a 390 or 428 in a slick, it would absolutely have to have a long DSO number). If it does not have a long DSO number then the next thing to look for if it was actually an available combo. Until I bought my 61 I would have said all big back window Unibodies were Custom Cabs and I would have been wrong. Now that I have one I looked in the master parts catalog I see big back window hardware for trucks without chrome around the window. This tells me that it was an available combination because Ford sold replacement parts. The part that threw me was my data plate on the glovebox door, it does not show a 66B body style. It turns out you could order a big back window seperate from the CC package. If you look up the rear window, it shows wrap around and regular glass and does not note body style beyond 66. If you look up the chrome trim then it does list it as being body style 66B only. Finally if you look up the rubber gasket it shows 3: 1. regular glass, 2. 66A with wrap around glass 3. 66B with wrap around glass! Weird combo's are even easier to verify with original dealer order blanks because there are restrictions and specifics on many items (for example, if you ordered a 428 Mustang you also had to order other heavy duty componets and could not opt for stuff like a standard 3 speed as it was noted as not available with that engine). The part where things get really weird is on fleet orders because they can be very odd but if you have a fleet book then it all makes perfect sense (except why some moron would actually order it that way!). Hey you will get no dispute from me that Ford would do weird and wooly things, plus change engines and add options at the dealership on top of what you've already said, Tom. But, look at the 3/4 ton 4x4 "Ranger" in this thread.
It has an F10 VIN number to start. Not 4x4 or 3/4 ton. A key component of a Ranger package, in fact the MAIN component of a Slick Ranger package is bucket seats. This truck has a bench seat. Has the wrong box and wheelbase for a '65 4x4 too.The only damn thing that is true in this guy's description of this vehicle is that it's a Ford. The rest is pure imagination. If you want to disagree with that, hey it's a free country. Bid away.

I wrote this fine seller the following note:
Hi. I see you have a 65 4x4 Ford Ranger here, but where are the bucket seats that make it a Ranger?
Why is the VIN for a 2 wheel drive F-100? Why are the box and wheelbase incorrect for a '65? Does it have a Chevy engine and drivetrain?
Thanks for your time.

Lesse what we get for a response. Should be comical.

My comment was not about the bogus POS in question, it is about the concepts and statements made about what Ford did. The truck speaks for itself so I did not feel that any comment was needed. I agree with most of what Hawk said. However there were many dealer optioned vehicles in the sixties. I was there and saw it. I think it was great. Tasca Ford would build you any kind of Mustang you wanted. Same with Lenko on the GM cars. Does cash talk at most dealerships, yes, I promise you it did back then and to a certain extent today. Don't get all caught up in how correct the factory was with their vehicle builds. One summer evening in 1965 we had pulled into a service station to get gas. Guy drives in with this beautiful CC SWB Ford. The sound from the exhaust told us it was modified. We talked to him and he was very nice. He said he ordered it with a 427. when he opened the hood to show us, sure enough, it was. He said he thought it was a factory option but found out the dealer had to remove the 352 to install the 427 and related parts when it came in. We didn't inspect it beyond the engine as we has pestered him enough. I'm not sure now but I think he said Jack Roach Ford in Houston optioned the truck. I don't find it hard to believe as Jack Jr. was into drag racing with dad's dealership as the sponser. Sorry for the long post but there is much more........................
