I just realzed that my transmission might not take "regular" ATF fluid. This is not the trucks original transmission and I have no information on it. I am pretty sure that it is a FMX or Cruiseomatic, anybody know what fluid it uses?
Are there any cool or useful mods known? Your experience with shift kits in this tranny would be also helpful.
The truck it is in has not been driven regularly in about 7 years, is there anything I should do besides change the fluid and filter. Also is the fluid level checked like it is on most automatics, with the tranny warm and the engine running, transmission in nuetral?

It Should use "Type-F"

When you have the fluid changed, be sure to change it all, not just the fluid in the pan. I have seen where the return line was removed and modified to suck up new fluid out of the gallon jug, with the old fluid being ejected into another jug. In my opinion, if you can afford it, have a shop change out the fluid with a machine specially made for the task. Then it is done right, and they have the liability for broken lines or leaks
trans fluid ?:hm: thats the red stuff i use for bar&chain oil in my chainsaw.
seriously Matt gave good advice.
trans shops can be scary and fly by nite so do some checking and ask around before you pick one out of the book.i have had some unpleasant experiences.get your warranty in writing.far as that goes take it to your local Ford garage, the guys will enjoy something other than exploders and foci to work on for a change.
best to see how the trans performs a while before adding shift kits and other mods.
one thing you can do is get the c6 extra deep pan and filter from a 70s truck, 4x4 or camper special and install those if you plan on pulling anything of size.

MattsIAslickshop, thanks for the advice, maybe I won't change it myself, I know how easy it is too knock around those tranny lines, etc. especially without the proper equipment.
Iceman6166, how will the C6 pan fit on my transmission? If the pans are that close maybe I have a C6, I just thought that the bolt pattern was different. I really don't know much about my truck, the PO couldn't answer many questions about it and I personally don't know that much about cars and trucks in general anyways.
I was looking for a site I had found, but I couldn't find the particular one. This one has some of the info I wanted to link to: http://www.bmracing.com/media/catalog/6.pdf

All the Cruise-O-Matics we ran used FLM fluid. The parts house can tell you if the name has changed. Most of those Torque Converters had drain plugs. Pull the pan, drain the converter and install a new filter kit. Unless the system was known to have contaminents in it, I wouldn't worry about the lines. If you don't know shoot some Varsol or carb cleaner down the lines, then blow them out with an air hose.
Thanks everyone for all the advice and information on my transmission. Thanks mikecarson (LMC catalog) I know that it is a FMX or Cruiseomatic. Anybody know what the difference between these two itransmissions is? Also thanks to jakdad, I did not even know that they made torque converters with drain plugs. Iceman6166,I tried to take a picture of the pan and I can't get one because the truck is too low to get a good picture, maybe I'll get some jackstands and do that. MattIASlickShop-Thanks again. THANKS EVERYBODY!
