Drives like a dream

Post by BMJ's 65 »

I finished up the front end on the Bump the other day. New radius and pivot bushings, new king pins and king pin bushings and a complete overhaul of the front brakes. I cannot believe how much better it drives.

I shouldn't have waited so long to do it. It wasn't near as bad a job as I thought it would be.

I've done that same job on two trucks now & I agree, it's a world of difference with new stuff in it! :thumright:
It's almost as if you have power steering now, huh? (or maybe you do already)

I've got power steering but it is soooo much sweeter now. I'm gonna take another half coil off the springs tomorrow and that should wrap it up.

As you can plainly see, you would not have got it all accomplished without the instructions you were being given. Neat pics. Enjoy the young-uns, they grow up to fast. My youngest daughter is 48.

Maybe you should give my dad some encouragement. He's been DREADING doing the Radius bushings and pivot bushings on his '78 F350. However, I told him since he's changing engines anyway he might as well fix all that crap while there's no engine in the truck. He also needs to repair the tilt column, and the steering gear.

He's had the new engine for two years and it's just sitting in the crate.

Did you have to cut any rivets replacing them on your bumpside?

Those urethane radius arm bushings are about worth their weight in gold! They take up alot of flex (even over new rubber ones) that solve alot of the Twin I's issues (axle travel front to rear). You will find an improvement in not only the driving but, tire wear, braking, and a tad in the fuel mileage. the fore & aft travel with the rubber bushings affects alignment slightly.

Absolutely Greg. The difference this has made is unbelievable. It's thrown the allignment off a little bit, but it was so screwed up anyway that it had to be done sooner or later. The best part was that I didn't have to cut anything. I dropped out each side as a sub-assembly. This will be one of the first things I do to any future Twin I Beam trucks I end up with.

No it's not that bad of a job. I swapped the whole front and rear from a '69 bump to my '65 Slick.
So do I have a BumpSlick or a SlickBump? :?
