Question if you've moved fuel tank

This is for someone who's moved there fuel tank to the rear between the frame.Do you think it would be possible to put the filler neck behind the license plate like some of the cars did way back when.
I dont want to put it in the bed if it can be done like this.But obviously there would probably be some type of clearance issue like this.I dont know.I have'nt seen one done in person to eyeball it.
Whadda ya think?

I tried and tried along time ago.I didnt wont the fill cap in the bed either. I could`nt come up with anything.If I remember correctly,the tag was too low. It would be nice if you can figure it out. Good luck!

im wanting to do the same thing and someone told me what gas tanks would fit inside the rails with those kits but it was while back on the old site and i dont rem.i see there point on it being too low but can u not just change the angle of the filler neck?

I changed the neck on mine, moved it to center and straight up. I don't see why you couldn't point it some other direction.

I did an article for Classic trucks with the Mustang tank and the filler in the bed and I'm really happy with the results.
But from time to time on eBay the same guy that sells the Mustang tank sells a replacement for a mid fifties Ford with the same basic dimensions as mine but with the filler neck coming out the side of the tank. Should be a snap to do the same basic install and have a muffler shop bend a filler to go out under the bed on top of the frame and up to the top of the wheel well or up thru the floor between the tail gate post and the wheel well.
Look at an early Bronco parts catalog and see the cover they have that hides this section. In fact, next time I get a chance I'll shoot a picture of Bronco Tom's early Bronco so you can see what I'm talking about.
Let those creative juices flow.
If I can figure out how, I'll attach a shot of a '58 with a filler in the top of the wheel well like I'm describing.

I made my gas tank with the filler out the side, ran the filler tube drivers side and up between the outer and inner bed panels. photos are in my album.

the bed stake pocket dont sound like a bad ideal but my reasons for wanting the license plate flip for 1 i dont like it in bed bc i dont wanna have to lower my 'gate and have to deal with possibly draggin the gas pump cross the paint and scratching and i had thought about using a modern style flip on drivers side but i want a smooth look i might try getting a tank and moving the filler neck when i get to that stage of the build.but these are all some good ideals!Just thought of somehting i seen on a 55 chevy he put it behind his tail light.the light was on some kind of hinge and it flipped down.

What options do we have?
I was thinking something like a '53-'56 tank but it would need to be on the inside of the frame to give some protection from a side impact,correct?

chev used the tail light filler 1 year and one year only as they realized the dangers of placing it there if you get into an accedent you now have to live wires sitting above your filler neck also the bulb breaking or shorting above your gas tank filler neck not a good idea the best solution i came up with because i didnt want to cut holes in the side and repaint and also didnt want to fill in the floor of the box was to run 2 inch muffler pipe along the frame and up into the cab and use the original filler neck on the side of the cab having the tank in the truck didn't bother me i wanted the space behind the seat for storage and also hold 23 gallons of fuel now

Skip wrote that article about using an early Mustang tank between the frame rails in back. The 61-67 Econoline used the same size tank but had a side fill. Not sure how many old vans are still around for donors though.

I am not so sure about that "fact". It is true that only the 56 Chevy had the filler behind the light but 57 had it in the exact same location but with the redesign of the body the lights were lowered. I am pretty sure that had the lights stayed up high the filler would have still been behind it. GM actually had a couple of vehicles with fillers behind lights. In fact all Cadillacs did from 1948-1956 and again the 57 Cadillac had the new GM "wider lower look" which moved the lights down. I think the fact that Chevy only did it one year was not a safety issue but a design issue. GM was moving features from the more expensive lines down into the cheaper cars to give them more appeal but they did it on the Chevy at the end of the design cycle for light location. I do agree however, sparks and gas don't mix! Hawkrod

I like the idea about the muffler pipe from the cab to the tank!I wont have a DUMMY hole in my cab.Dont have to WALKas FAR for gas either.
Got a few questions about that idea.Did you weld a flange on the pipe holding to the floor so it doesnt rattle?After it goes through the floor and turns back did you go under the cab or cut a hole to keep it up high.What about cab and bed flex.Did you turn the tank around?

Well, I know this isn't as clean as what your looking for. The PO of my truck had a custom tank made in the bed (fuel cell style) and has a metal storage box that kinda slips over the tank. The floor of the box was moved to just above the tank and holes cut for the filler. It's a 60 gal tank. The only oops he had, I cannot find a provision for a sending unit. It should have been easy when he was building it. There is however two filler holes. Which I planning on modifing a sending unit to work.

If I get sick of the tool box look I figure I'll pop it off and put a tonnau cover over it.

I had another thought on this subject.Is there going to be a difference in this mod between a short and long box? I have a short and was wondering if the swap will work the same for both
