New Guy w/ a Question (or two)
Hi all,
just a little background. bought my 65' f100 shortbed fleetside about a year and a half ago. paid $300 for it and drug it (literally) home with a tractor. little gas in the carb and a fresh battery and she fired right up.
Since then ive torn it all the way down to the frame. new brakes, shocks, bushings, bearings, cab mounts, floor pans, kick panels, removed 5 different colors of crappy paint, heat shrunk the dents out tf the bedsides where it was hit by a fork lift, and replaced a half a dozen rust holes including the bottom three inches of the core support. someone removed the trim with a crow bar in the past to a billion dents and dings were removed and the holes welded shut. all the trim was shaved and all the factory seams were filled and smoothed.
Strait six was upgraded with a holly 4bbl and a offenhauser intake. with tuned headers. moved the three speed to the floor and shaved the column, and got rid of the stump pulling 4.22s in the rearend for a set of 2.50s (they were free and it pulls just fine).
now for my question. im about ready for paint but i am having trouble setting the alignment on the hood. the old hood hinges are just worn out. with the springs installed they have enough slop in them that they pull apart and the bar between the two hinge sections comes of the pins and they no longer open or close correctly. they bind. with out the springs the hinges work fine but the back of the hood doesnt pull down against the cab and firewall like it should. Any suggestions? i tried heating the different rivets and hinge points on the hinges and tightening them up with a hammer but no success. do they sell reproduction hinges?
ill add pictures as soon as i figure out how.
thanks in advance!

First off WELCOME to the Brotherhood of the Addicted..........to slicks that is. Great group of folks who probably know more than Henry does anout these wounderful trucks. The hood hinges are a problem and many of the aftermarket replacements (from across the sea) are not much better than the ones you have. Dennis Carpenter is a pretty safe bet and if you use the search function here ther was a post a while back on a guy that rebuilds them and then has a real good warrenty..............life. Not sure if it was his, the buyers or the trucks
Good luck, I am sure others will chime in with some other options as well.................Ross

Welcome! It's good to see another Six fan!
On my first slick I thought it was just habit, shut the hood and then press down on the back of the hood to get it to set right.

Fortunately the hinges on my slick now are good.
Did you have your valve cover powder coated or did you just paint it?
Have Fun!

First off thanks to everyone for their input. especially the link to the hinge repair. sounds like the way to go. i would use mine without the springs but at about 65 mph the back of the hood starts lifting. it looks like crap.
im going to try to answer all the questions so far (forgive me im new to forums so i dont know how to answer directly)
im located in southern illinois about 60 miles south east of st. louis. im a 22 year old full time college student at Southeast Missouri State (SEMO) if anyone knows of it.
as for color... dont laugh... purple. just a preference of mine. purple body with off white for the grill and bumpers.
the valve cover is just high temp aluminum colored header paint. then i used the ford blue engine enamel to highlight the script.
thanks to everyone who has seen it and comlimented it. this is my third vehicle to "restore" and i would like to think im getting decent at it. ive seen most of the trucks on this forum. You all are far better craftsman than i am. for now any way.
here are my other cars:

i have thought about fames. in fact im still thinking about it. only problem is this truck is going to have to earn its keep working. im leaning towards something clean and simple that i can easly retouch if something happens. ( i work construction so it will have a toolbox in the back and be on the job sites)
