Timing mark and brake question

Post by norville »

Hello folks,

I have 2 questions I hope you can answer.

1: How far away from the "0" mark on the pully is 10 deg BTDC. I can find the "0" but no other markings on my pully(internally dampened right?). Is it an inch or the length of a 1/4 dollar, nickle,,what ???? I need to set the base timing so I can adjust the carb and idle. Most seem happy with about 10deg btdc.

I was told by the PO I have a 1964 390 from a demo t-bird.

2: I installed the power pedals from a 72 on my 65 . Do I need a brake return spring on my brake pedal???

thanks

bob

each 2 degrees is about 1/8 inch spacing. 10 degrees is roughly 5/8 inch.
i think thats a couple degrees more than needed as mine are @ 6 btdc.depends on cam and other aspects though.

not sure about the return spring but the only ones i have seen on our trucks are on the 61-64 style cabs with the single pot.cant recall if there were any on the 65-66s i parted out. i dont know the reason they were used, but i will guess because of the pressure operated switch.

You can buy the "timing tapes" to put on your balancer. Look at Jegs or Summit. Oreilly may carry them.

Thanks for the replies.

Iceman, that makes seems correct. The 65 single pot had it and my 72 does not.

The timing tape sounds good, I'll have to look cause I only have a 1/4" of room.

Supposidly this 390 is worked over. It has headers and a 4 barrel. I have reciepts for balancing and honing I think bores are at 4.05?? From the work sheets. I'm not sure of the crank and cam. I have the numbers just have not researched the parts.

thanks again,
bob
