Surgery on my '65

Post by cerealdaemon »

Well, this weekend was beautiful, so I figured that there was no better time than now to start on the surgery.

I took the bed off, the hood off, the front valence, grill, front grill support, radiator and a bunch of other stuff. All this with the goal of replacing some key engine components.

This is what I started with.

This is where I'm at right now

Here you can see the rats nest of wiring that I'm going to be replacing and rerouting to make much more visually appealing.

Here is a shot of some anti-freeze that had leaked onto the block, this I found was only the result of a clamp that wasn't as tight as it should have been. I was kind disconcerting to start off with though!

Here is another shot of the engine bay.

Not all is good with the truck though, there are a couple of spots that a previous bondo job went bad

Here is also a picture of a rotted cab support.

I need new headers, here you can see the exhaust manifold has begun to crack, its only at the flange right now, but its not a good thing at all.

Finally, here is a picture of the kinda goofy weld job that some exhaust guy did on the pipes.

Not all is bad news though, here are some new parts that are going to go in the engine!

Let me know what you guys think of how its going!

Yes a perfect day for a slick dissection watch em though I scattered ours in a couple of days and it took a year to get it back together.
Looks like it will be nice when you get done with it. :thumright:

I can identify with that! I took my '66 apart when my Son was this big...he's now 24 & it's still in pieces.
That's what happens when you take it apart and THEN decide if you can afford to fix it & raise a family at the same time.

Don't sweat the exhaust manifolds, pretty sure foxbody Mustang shorty headers work fine. Get them from the pull ur own or there are new ones out there for less than $100 a set.

that's pretty nice, despite the rot. Hopefully you can get that all patched up Nicely...

Watch out for Ford Racing stuff. Especially any dipsticks. I bought a dipstick and tube for my C6, the stick was CHROME plated. ooee. I stuck it in, pulled it out only 2-3 times before I noticed all the chrome flaking off because it had to flex. I was pissed. This Really nice, Approved By Ford dipstick just tried to kill my transmission.

yeah, get some nice headers and redo the pipes... dual 2"s probably do nicely. Dynomax makes a nice throaty, but modest muffler.

That puddle of anti-freeze comes factory on small blocks.

May have been a clamp but more likely the intake seaping. They ALL do it. When you put that new intake on ....put a little silicone around that front water passage on each side. do it on the head and the intake....just a slight smear...and you should be good to go.

Nice upgrades and spiff her up alittle ---she'll be ready for the prom.Ya know they don't like all them wires blowin in the wind.

Looks like fun!

I have a good lower vailance and a set of stock exauhst manifolds for a 302. Shipping would suck, but I could bring them to SS if you are coming.

Greg they wouldn't work on my truck. The header exhaust flange was aimed streight at the clutch equalizer bar/bell crank or what ever ya call it. There was no room to rout the exhaust pipe. I had to use shorty headers for a 1993 351w streight shift.
