Turn Signal Switch?
Turn Signal Switch?
My 65 has the stem missing and I do not know what else, but it has Power steering and I do not know if it came with it or not.
I am wondering if I have to change he switch out how can i identify what it is for? I know the part store people will ask what it is out of..
any ideas on identifying it or what should I do?

Steering box
If you are trying to identify the steering box, the casting numbers you show only tell you about the COVER. The numbers for the steering box are down on the driver's side of the box... visible through the wheel well. It will likely take some scraping and cleaning, but you may be able to see them. I remember scraping, cleaning a friend's truck to ID his power steering box. I wanted to use the same one for my conversion. I had to light the area with a drop light, then digitally photograph it without a flash to avoid washing out the image. That top cap with casting numbers was the same on several years and models of trucks and cars. The cap won't tell you about the box.
Good luck.

Seeing how they are all the same 64-72 2wd, and your column is one of those, I'd say this one

It's a race.. Will hell freeze over or will JC finish his truck first. Stay tuned..

First let me say thanks for all the help but i have one more dumb question... It looks like if I screwed that into the switch it would stick straight into the steering wheel. Of course this is all off of the picture .. Anyone have a picture of there coluum with the stalk screwed in?
And thanks for the website..

I think I should point out that you can't tell enough from those pictures! The steering column probably is an early one but the only differences between say a 67 and a 75 are on the other side of the column. the later upper column piece where the turn signal switch mounts is different on trucks with emergency flashers built into the switch as there is a cutout on the side of the column we can't see for the button. The switches are basically interchangable from 63-77 except for the emergency button and the connectors need to be changed. If you want emergency flashers in the column then just buy a later switch and upper collar and splice the connectors otherwise just buy the switch for the year of the truck. On my 61 I just used a 74 turn signal housing and switch and put the bullet connectors onto the later switch. Easy to do. Hawkrod
Thanks for the replies and no this coluum does not have emergency flashers and I personal do not care if I have them. I guess i will test the tturn signals with a screw driver first then go from there..
Thanks everyone for your help....I am likeing this old truck more and more ...

What will tell you about this box is the steel ID Tag on that bolt & will start with the letter S,, Also I asked a ? before on what is that yellow thing between the Rag Joint & Bottom of the Column Also look at that plate that is attached to the firewall & see if it is marked Power Steering If not that is the wrong plate & will throw the alignment of the column,,, I have seen too many not use this column,,,Also is column automatic on the column or Floor shift,,, The reason for asking is this Column has been altered & I cannot see the correct bottom bearing or part that adjusts the gap between the column & steering wheel even though the gap is pretty close to what it is suppose to be & don't take this the wrong way but if I saw this in person what I think I can see in the bottom pictures of how this column has been altered I would not even attempt to drive this truck,,, We get many columns in here where somebody tries or reads on how to shorten columns which some is very unsafe,,, I just feel there is something missing down there ,,,If that is a loom cover over it take it off then take a picture & then I can see what looks like whats missing,,, if I am wrong then it can give you piece of mine for being safe on this safety check

I think the picture clearly shows that the column is correctly centered so I don't think the firewall plate is an issue. You do not have to use the correct plate, but you do have to move all the holes and remount the wrong plate. This one actually looks like the correct plate though. Also, you do not need a bottom bearing in a truck that is in good shape. The bottom bearing was put in the columns solely due to the anticipated use as a heavy duty truck. Most Fords do not use a bottom bearing and the lower shaft just floats in the housing (this drives the Mustang guys nuts! There just has to be something in the hole right? LOL!). Hawkrod

WRONG,WRONG,WRONG
Anybody giving wrong advice especially when it comes to steering does not what they are talking about,,, Ford had 2 plates made for a reason 1 MARKED POWER STEERING & The other not marked Both plates have different pitches & lengths where the couple clamp goes & there is a reason for the bottom bearing to keep the shaft center,,,
OK TAKE YOUR CENTER BEARING OUT This will put more pressure on that Rag Joint & some day it will break & no steering & kill you or somebody Just beacuse somebody said you don't need it... Boy this makes me mad when trying to take short cuts
And by the way I build at least 4-5 Columns a month the right way because the customer wants it right & will trust there life with My Opinion on what I say not what somebody else might want to take shortcuts,,, There is no shortcuts when it come to steering columns
Mustangs & Trucks are 2 different breeds so this should not even been mention

I pm'd 6166 Junkyard Dog about one of his coluums and he never returned the pm. My truck drives fine and I have no play in the steering at all.. Now to work on the turn signal switch and brakes I will be happy. I have another motor about ready for it so instead of the little 460 it will be a 557 cid ...
