Catch in starter..Suggestions?

Over the last few starts, "Dixie" not wanting to start on 1st attempt. Starter spins, like bendix not connected. Had loose bolt. Another missing. Replaced all three bolts, Tightened and fired up 1st time. Now same thing on next attempt to start. Freespin w/o turning ring gear/flywheel.

Already replaced flywheel and ring gear 15,000 miles ago. Hoping for cheaper solution.

Starter itself?

Suggestions?

whee, whee, whee.
can get quite annoying.

have been thru this many times.

think i may hold a record for turning the key and hearing that noise @ 147 times in a single attempt to start one of my trucks many years ago.

the cold did not help and i was not on a hill either.

you can replace the drive gear and spring or the whole starter, but either way it needs to come out, and since you have new flywheel and ring gear might as well go for the new starter too.

We/re hoping the bad starter has not messed anything up

We put in a new starter when we put in heavy duty flywheel and new ring gear 15 k mi ago.

Should we spring for a better high torque starter than stock?

If the new style Ford mini stater will fit what you have for a motor use one of those.

I don't think that Ford built one for the FE engines.

do we need high torque too last longer?

jegs $149 1: 4.1 reduction high torque

autozone < $50...only lasted 15K

my opinion is that a lot of the parts from the discount chain stores are not of the highest quality.

there is also a difference between new, rebuilt and remanufactured.

new is new from ford.

rebuilt is exactly as it sounds, someone elses starter (core) that has been cleaned up and rebuilt with the parts needed to pass the load test.

remanufactured means made new to ford specs by a ford licensed remanufacturer. because of the age of these, getting one from the dealer would also be a remanufactured one.

obviously you want to try to get a USA remanufactured starter , should come with a warranty better than the rebuilt ones and will cost more too but you get what you pay for.

the jegs starter is fine for high compression engines but overkill for the standard or lightly built engine.

Look in the yellow pages for your local battery house or alternator rebuilder. most of thes will rebuild starters as good as Ford (or Autolite) did. I get my starters done for 25 bucks, and that includes a new armerature.

See if you can get one remanufactured by USA Industries. They're plant is located in my town. I put their starters and alternators in every vehicle I've owned and never had a problem. (except the time I droped a starter on the way out of the parts store) President Bush visited their factory about 4 years ago.
