Factory Original Options and Accessories......

Post by DanSanDiego2000 »

Although my 1965 Custom Cab had some extra trim, door panels, headliner, etc., it really lacked in the options department. No power anything was ordered on this truck. Starting with this bare-basics truck, I am trying to add as many original options as possible (or practical) for comfort and fun. I added power steering, washer pump and nozzles, and hazard lights. Next is power brakes.

So many of the items I have added so far are direct bolt-on items, easy to install (like the hazards, for instance). Not true of all items, though.

I bought the door jamb switches for the courtesy lights. The only way my dome light comes on now is with the headlight switch. The new, aftermarket switches I got look identical to the washer pump switch, so I know they are true to original. However, there is not an obvious spot to mount them in the pillars. :?

A little different from the washer pump button, these switches go into a keyhole shaped hole.... not just a 7/8" or 1" round hole, but a round hole with a square tab at the 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock positions. It will take a little handiwork to craft the correct hole.

Question is..... where do you put the hole???

Input welcomed..............

Okay, lets back up and punt. Apparently, you may be confused. Number one, you have me confused, as to what you are trying to do. Period correct or original, restore or make modern? A true restoration of the 65 takes a different pwoer steering setup from the 66 and later. At least that is my understanding. there were no door jamb switches on thes trucks for the inside light. Options, were sparse, now hard to come by. Such things were sold under Fords banner or Rotunda. These were available different mirrors, steps for side of bed, some on Ebay right now, full hubcaps, 66 Galaxy style, and 63 ful caps in 15 inch, same as hipo 427 cars. Good luck finding a set of these. Bucket seats, and consul, carpet, padded visors, scratch gaurds, door rain gaurds, bumper gaurds I think, power brake booster, radio was an option. I know I've issed several , some the same for cars.

Weapons of Mass Destruction, for instance.....

Post by DanSanDiego2000 »

I know you can't believe everything you read, like "Weapons of Mass Destruction", for instance. I looked back at the LMC catalog, and they list door jamb switches for '51-'56, and for '68-'72. Wouldn't you know it,.... no listing for the Slicks. I guess if I want to use the switches, I have to figure out a good place for them.
I am not trying to make it a concours truck. The power steering box is a '71-up, the steering pump came out of the 90s, the hubcaps are '66 F100 (or Galaxie, I understand), I made the door panels with speakers (to keep me from going stir-crazy without tunes), and the vinyl tailgate decals saved me from hours of painting the raised letters. I want to make a comfortable truck with bells and whistles for safety and comfort. The addition of the door jamb switches would be more comfortable and safer for night driving. It is my work truck and daily driver.

I enjoy the truck more than I ever thought I would. It's been in the family for 30 years, and is a rolling tribute to the memory of my father. I wish he could have driven it after the renovation!!

Best regards.

Dan

Nice truck.

As to the 65 Ranger, mine has the bucket seats and consul, which I believe, was part of the Ranger package. Although, I am not absolutely positive on this. Just believe it to be so. However, I don't have proof one way or the other, and you could order trucks with pretty much anything available in Fords catalog. So, it's possible that the ranger could have been ordered with a bench seat, but then I don't think it would have been a ranger. Much like a certain brand X truck with Z71 decals. There's more to it than putting on a decal.

460V8, I live near UTC and UCSD. I work a lot in Vista, though. I've been there everyday for the last 2 weeks.

Small world.

Dan, the switches for the dome lights were optional even in the late 60s.besides the switches there is a special harness that hooks up to both sides.get it from a 67-79 in a junkyard .
how i would do the holes:
using a milwaukee hole saw of the correct size, drill thru below the top hinge, then take a small file and make the notches.the wires will be run thru the hole in the kickpanel where the gas and dome light wire are.you may have to drill a hole in the same place on the passenger side, not sure if its there already.if any more help needed im always happy to give it.

73-79 does not have a dome light harness. In 73 they made courtesy lights standard so the main dash wiring harness has the plugs in it for the door switches and they went to the funky threaded switches that only work until the first time they get wet (they were copper plated steel and as soon as the copper wears it rusts and no longer works). I'd be interested in finding out where you end up putting the door switches for the courtesy lights. I've been planning the same thing for awhile when it's time for the interior. I'm doing a '65 F-250 Ranger. Buckets, console, carpeting, tank cover, etc. The Ranger package included these features, though the console was actually an option over and above the Ranger package. Anyhow, my truck is pretty much going the same style... I like to call it a "restification", or, restoration with modifications. All the creature comforts of "modern" trucks... big block/C6, ps, pdb, ac, but all with original appearance... correct '65 auto column behind the C6, ac is a '65/'66 truck correct Rotunda under-dash unit, etc. You get the idea.
