why parts have numbers
cant find that hose or belt?
box stores irritating you?
be like me and order by number
every hose or belt has them, not always visible and sometimes worn off
if you can find the number and brand name, use them.much easier to go into a store and ask for gates belt# 9455 or napa hose #34615 than by model/year of truck.the computers can cross the numbers and give the other brands numbers.
one more thing, when they ask what is it for, tell them you have a hose/belt collection and that particular one is missing.

Haha! Much easier than telling them you have a 72 Maverick 302 in a 65 Ford F-100 with a 9" out of a 69 F-100 and the truck is blue, gets them all confused!

The response is different yet hauntingly the same depending on where you go
Canadian Tire (box store) Parts Counter: Pimply-faced 17-year old (his first job and second day on the job) "Does it have a turbo? 19 SIXTY 4? Did they build trucks then? Just a minute I'll get my manager". Manager comes, 35 years old been stocking shelves at Canadian tire since he was 17.... think of the guy that runs the store on "Malcom in the Middle"... "Sorry sir our computers don't go that far back...."
Napa: 18 year old girl at parts counter "Does it have a Turbo? giggle giggle.. 19 SIXTY 4? jiggle jiggle..
I have a listing for a 19 EIGHTY 4... it was a Chevrolet , right? giggle giggle.. Are Mercurys built by Chevrolet? jiggle jiggle.. Just a minute I'll get my manager." Manager comes 39 year old Woman, worked at McDonalds until a month ago "Sorry, I could look it up in the book, but the guy who usually does that is on Vacation until October... did you need it right away?"
Bumper to Bumper: 60 year old parts man his first job after 15 years as a recovering Alcoholic: "64 Merc you say.... my dad had one of those... his had a 200 six and a 2 speed automatic... seems to me those are listed as Fords... '53 you said?".... yep we got one!" ...goes away for about 3 hours, comes back to the counter after cobwebs form on you..
"Can I help you sir?"
Local Parts place been in business since the Sixties: 5 parts men know every person that walks in the store EXCEPT you... wait 2 hours while all 5 of them visit for 1/2 hr each with every person who walks in the store. "Can I help you? Sorry didn't see you there. We are closing in 10 minutes... what can I do ya for? 64 Mercury... that's gonna be in one of these books"... rifles thru about 6 books, each one 8 inches thick. "Yep we got one".... goes in the back. Never returns. One of the other parts men stops visiting after about 20 minutes... comes up to you and tells you the store is now closed, please come back tomorrow.
This is why I buy parts on Ebay..

It's a race.. Will hell freeze over or will JC finish his truck first. Stay tuned..
That's odd, I usually have good luck at Napa. I went in with a big list of stuff, just to price it out. They actually had a cap, rotor, and set of points for a 223 in stock.
Canadian Tire has no listing for our trucks but they do have listings for Galaxies. That's what I ask for if I'm ever looking for parts for a 223. Not that they'd have anything. I did manage to get my starter tested there, even though they still need to find it on their computer first.
The young guy at Partsource actually located some front drums for me. But not before showing me some 8-lug drums for a GM...

I have found good help at O'Reileys. Most of the guys there know Fords and Chevys pretty well. The manager there has a 58 F-100 so we talk quite a bit.
I am to the point that they let me sit there and go through the comp myself and look through the books (they joke that they keep them around just for me.
)
I worked at NAPA in highschool, they train you to be dumb. I was demoted to driver because I "Drove away bussness", what I did was tell people that they didn't need the high $$ stuff, and I helped them fix the problem the first time instead of throwing parts at it.
I get a lot of stuff online but I try to support the parts house here that knows whats going on.

my choices in parts stores are severely limited.
what i get to deal with
Car-Quest
run by a friend who bought out the previous owner who retired and was a Ford truck owner.good store, mostly i call and order as the usual stuff i need is not in stock.the young girl in there is the daughter of the owner, probably knows more than all the box store girls combined.closest source
NAPA Northern Lights Autocare
not a store but a repair shop owned by a Canuck friend of mine
i can get anything NAPA sells at his cost. bring beer to make up for loss of profit on parts.ok, but the autocare is 22 miles away and i dont get up there much
Big Lake Napa
independently owned store, most of the autocare stuff comes from this store.41 miles away.
Mt.View Auto
a real old time parts store.
all kinds of stuff the box stores dont have.
several warehouse sources, pretty much guaranteed success on older parts due to employee and owner interest. busy, plan on sitting on the stool, but usually theres snacks.they do their best to keep you from going to the box stores.almost 50 miles, one way.if Dave and Woody cant find it, your going to have to modify or adapt.
places i dont go
Wasilla NAPA, unless i need some lighting products or wiring supplies.very large collection.got into argument over timing gear for 302.wrong gear was in correctly numbered box. employee refused to believe me.had him get me just a gear in the box, then when i showed him the difference he made like it was my doing.
Schucks(also called Checker,Kragen in the 48.)
lots of doo-dads for your ricer.all sorts of gaudy plastics.no brains for parts.good place to go buy cheap oil .say hi to all the young women working there.
none of the parts stores online ship here.
why do i collect those trucks no one seems to want ?
between that and members or e-bay, its my best bet at getting the needed parts.

I was working on the 65 Karmen Ghia's brakes. Ordered the wheel cylinders online and one of them leaked like crazy. Went into Advance Auto Parts and told the kid what I needed and the look on his face said it all. You have a 196what? You need a brake what? I knew it would not be in the computer by year, or model. Finally convinced him to look up a part number and sure enough he had one on the shelf and it was actually cheaper than online! Fixed the leak and I was back on the road.
Went to get belts for the slick the other day, nope there computer did not go back that far, I asked for belts for a 4.9 for the year the computer went back to. The young girl did not want to sell them to me as she was shure they would not work. They fit just like they were supposed to.
I try to be nice to them, it is just hard when they are more interested in the latest ...... than selling a part to me.
Anyway, Have Fun!

How 80's
Got a buddy who works at one here no books allowed only computer. have to hide hard copys in back so customers can't see them.
And for all you Americans Canadian tire is like Pep Boys with a sporting goods, hardware and housewares section.
And is the Offical parts store Of Nascar Canada and Title sponsor of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.
Guess I'm going to have to change my name CASCAR is no more.
It is now offically NASCAR Canada

I called a local "drive line specialist" parts store in the Cincinnatti area for a clutch, presure plate and throw-out bearing for a car. When the man started asking me the car's spec's, he actually asked if it was a manual or automatic transmition. How do you reply to that? I understand he was probably just asking the questions that popped up on the screen, but really, wouldn't you go ahead and fill in that blank??

Yep. Besides all the Avon ladies that work there, they actually have one REAL Partsman, who is usually on holidays when I go there. But, one time I caught him there, while I was looking for spring bushings. He looked 'em up in the Catalogue right in front of me.castruck_1964 wrote:Hey Johnny your NAPA store has cataloguesHow 80's

The other parts girls were doing their nails.
Don't get me wrong I have nothing against female partspersons. Just the girls they hire in this place wouldn't know a snow tire from an exhaust header.

clutch fun
Had to replace the clutch in my 63 Scout. Problem was it had a 289 in it. Parts stores where useless, even the good ones that I got most odd stuff from. Nobody could decide if it was a ford clutch or an international clutch. Finally went down to Toronto were there was a Felpro outlet (that didn't sell to the public) and walked in the back. dropped the clutch on the counter in front of a young guy who had that wierd look of I dont know a thing. a few minutes of trying to explain my story, and an old feller walked by the counter, glanced at the clutch and said" International". I walked out a few minutes later with a new cluth for about $25.
Thank God for us old guys, cause the new ones just dont seem to want to bother. (I know that sounded a little age discriminitory, and I was probably the same when I was young, but this is ME looking for parts now!)

From a guy without his Ford that he left on a rock in the North Atlantic.
