Picked up a small needle scaler this past Saturday. The air compressor is loud and the tool is loud, but I wore inner ear plugs and outer muffs to squelch the noise. This made relatively quick work of the thick frame paint over rust. It doesn't get it down to bright metal like a sand blaster, but it gets the paint, any loose rust scale and leaves a surface that can be wire brushed more easily.

Yep, it was from harbor freight. A few drops of oil down the air fitting and dont crank the pressure over 90psi. The noise was the worst part, but with double ear plugs its bearable. The needles eventually rounded over some after a couple hours use, but a touch on the grinding wheel squared them off again and gave them more bite.

First I started laughing thinking of those fake Harbor freight adds !!!
Then I was looking at that tool trying to figure it out as I have never seen one before.. Then it dawns on me.. it must work just like one of those party favors that if you blow thru them hard enough they straighten out and shake the streamers on the end..
This thing is like a steel high pressurized party favor that the streamers beat the surface until something gives...
And now I am laughing about the fake Harbor Freight adds again !
I picked up an old school needle scaler years ago, never thought to use it on our truck frame.
I redid an old Greenburg fire hydant in the eighties with it, and it worked great. If you push too hard it bends the needles ,not hard enough, it barely works.
Used to do a lot of stick welding, great for slag. Also great for cleaning burned on carbon and on old cast iron parts. If you do a weld repair on cast iron you can use a die grinder to rough up the weld surface then use the needler to blend the weld into surrounding metal.

Years ago, on one of the ships I was assigned, we had to use needle guns to clean off deck plates. It was the worst week of my life.

I first heard of them as a solution to remove undercoating and/or soundproofing. Seems I've used one, but don't remember if I bought it or borrowed it. I haven't seen it in my shop unpacking, so must've borrowed it.
