Rack & Pinion FOR 65 FACTORY SUSPENSION?????

Post by NUMA NEWBERN »

Well I see many posts about straight ax setups, but does ANYONE have a R&P on their 1965 FACTORY front suspension? Is it possible? Is there anything that would make it IMPOSSIBLE with the factory suspension? Could the setup for the straight ax be converted?
I have already converted the drums to the newer steering arms with discs.
Thanks for ANY direction

I don't know if anyone has tried it for the twin i beam suspension but I think it could be doable if you found the appropriate R&P that pivots in the same plane as the I-beams or else you'd get a whole lot of bumpsteer. Many companies have been adapting R&P to old Galaxies and old Chevies. Would probably take a lot of trial & error unless you're an engineer type who can figure a lot of that out before getting greasy. :) Type of engine & oil pan location would have to be considered also. Here's one example....

It should be possible as noted above.

However, with the factory twin I-beam set up, bump steer issues cannot be avoided since the pivot points are on the opposite side of the truck. At least not with a conventional R&P as we know it.

Some of the R&P adapter kits use a center-steer GM rack from the J cars. If correctly placed, I wonder if it could minimize the bumpsteer more than the other style rack?

Anything is possible, but that doesn't make it a good idea. The steering linkage on a twin-I beam setup has to cross or you will have ungodly bumpsteer.

What is the reasoning behind wanting a rack and pinion?

Here's another style to work with.

Cross steering eliminates the bump steer issue. I've also seen these used mounted parallel to the frame rail and steering the left spindle using the stock steering arm. That lets a drag link go to the other side. Again, no/minimal bump steer.
