repairing frame mounting holes?

Post by rderr »

I saw on "Gears", "Trucks" or some other show where they welded what looked like very large thick washers to the cab mounting supports to repair the rusted out (wallowed out) holes back to original size rather than cutting the rivets and replacing the supports. Once they were ground down it looked like a very nice repai job. Has anyone done this or similar repairs? Is this feasible or should I just replace the supports? If I cut the rivets, can I weld in the replacement supports instead of rivets? I also have to figure out how to repair the mounting holes in the front frame rails for the radiator support bushings. This is all on my 66 2wd.
Thanks,
Rick

Welding in washers to replace the rusted holes sounds like a good plan to me. As long as there is good steel to weld to. It also would be less expensive and time consuming. The frame rivets can be cut with a GOOD air chisel if u decide to go that route. I have taken riveted on front suspension pieces off the frame in the past. It wasn't a big issue but I doubt I would do it again unless it was absolutely necessary.

***If you remove & replace the mount, either rivet it back on, or use grad eight hardware in a zero clearance hole to bolt them back on. Welding the mounts back on would be my LAST choice

Thanks James. I was wondering about using some grade eight bolts as well. The cab mounts can be replaced like you mentioned however, I also have an issue where the radiator support mounts to the front frame rails has wollowed out to. That is going to have to be repaired somehow.

I would try and find plain steel washers as a zinc coated washer will contaminate the weld.

We have just built up the hole with a MIG; in this case it was ripped in a collision and proved to be slightly oversize when straightened. A correct o.d. washer makes a good guide to size the weld repair and restore it to a circular shape. One could probably back up the bottom side with a washer, but I saw no reason to.
I'll try to get some pics when we remove the core support for paint.
