Cutting a bit more off the front coils?

Post by William-in-St George »

Well the good news is that the rear spring front hangar flip seems to have worked out nicely. No drive shaft bind and with the gas shocks the red truck has a nice firm rear. The issue now is that the rear is a little lower than the front. The primary reason for this post is about cutting the front coils. These coils are out of a 78 F250 with 460 so they are very heavy to begin with. I cut one coil out and dropped the front down to about the height of a stock F100. Now i need to drop the front about an inch more and am considering cutting an additional half round off the coils. My concern is that I'll cut too much and have to replace the coils. Your comments or sharing your experience with this issue is appreciate.

William another half a coil isnt going to kill the spring . You may get to a point where you need to have your beams bent to get the camber back but 1 and 1/2 coils is fairly common.

Sorry, I cannot post pics of the hangar flip. Don't know how. I removed the rivets holding the front spring hangar to the frame. I loosened the rear shackle bolts and put the hangar back on upside down using the two bottom rivet holes. Currently I have two grade 8 bolts holding the shackle on. Later I'll have two tabs welded to the hangar and add two more bolts in the original top holes. This was fairly easy, cheap and I didn't change the spring arch. Literally the only issue is that the rear is about an inch lower than the front. Next project will be to remove about 1/2 more coil off the front.
