Y block starter question.

I just had my starter rebuilt, and the shop said do not slide the bendix back, or it will be a pain to get started. Well I bring it home climb under the truck, had my buddy hand me the starter and he does it by the bendix, now it is stuck? How do I get the bendix back to end of the shaft? And why the hell does it get stuck ? Hope this explains my situation. Oh and that someone has a solution. Thanks Ryan

it needs 325 rpm to push it back out.
hooking up jumper cables and spinning the starter un hooked will not solve the problem, a wire brush on a bench grinder spinning against the gear will if you hit it right.

i personally do not make a big deal out of that happening though as it is still easy enough to get the starter in with the gear back, bolt it in and then when you turn the key and start the truck it takes care of that.

kinda funny i asked iceman the same thing last year after my buddy doinked around and spun the bindex to see what would happen. put it in and started the truck like ice said.

If you can't get it started right away, push start the truck and it will kick back.

Which groove are you speaking of! I am very curios of this method just so I can try it for the hell of it. I love old mechanic wisdom.

Twist the bendix all the way forward and place the pencil lead in the grouve in the starter shaft and rotate the bendix backward and it will jump in place. Try it a few times and you will get the hang of doing correct

Wish I had found this all out awhile ago I ended up completely dissassembling mine.

There is a double helix on the shaft and only one has that detent that keeps the bendix stuck out there. so if the pencil lead wont work on the one side, try the other.
