Under bed gas tank swap

Post by brownie62 »

Any one have any info of a under bed gas tank swap? Maybe one from some late model car/truck that has a in tank fuel pump? Got tired of smelling gas in the cab all these years so when I pulled the tank this time for the update took it to the junk pile!

Why bother?

Ford had the incab tank for over 50 years.

I like it, I can judge how much gas I have by the sound it makes sloshing around.
Over the hill and picking up speed!

Here's the swap I did in my '72...> http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... &sk=t&sd=a
Same thing. I moved the tank to get some weight over the rear axle to help with traction.

Uncle Skip has a good write-up/how-to on installing a Mustang tank. Try Hints and Tricks.

If you want to go through the frame and out through the rear fender for a fill I used a 1949 chevy coupe SS 16 gal tank. With the mustangs you have to come up through the bed to fill and I opted against that. I got the idea from a posting on this site. You'll have to look around for it as I am not that savy on the computer to hook up a link for it.

Nice job! I am having to raise my bed floor due to the changes in the frame to lower the truck. I think I will have room to run tubing under the bed floor to plumb up a side fill access in the side of the bed. Think the mustang tank will work best. I have a old tank out of my 73 Mach 1 to fabricate the mounting and then I will buy a new tank. Thanks for all the advice. Going to have to fabricate new upper shock mounts too.
