trouble on DD lane

Post by Anthony's Son »

So yesterday I developed a miss.. No biggy, i just changed plugs, wires, cap, and rotor.. So possibly a bad plug.. Take them out, put the old ones back in. Still has a miss, went to leave work this evening (local parts store) and my gen light comes on... Hmmmm.. Okay well my lights are still bright, radio is fine, drive her home and get a meter, and sure enough 12.35 volts.. So its alternator time! Horray for full time college student, part-time job pay!! haha  :2cents:

Are you using points? Why change the plugs to cure a miss? A diagnosis would be in order prior to changing any parts. The generator may be giving up but it could be battery, battery cables, regulator or even as simple as a weak ground. Again do a bit more diagnosis before you swap out the generator. Swapping in a alternator conversion is good money spent. You can delay this repair for a while by charging the battery when parked and just driving back an forth to work for now. Carry a spare battery and some cables just in case. Save your money and then do the swap. That employee parts discount will help!

Yes it does still have points and the plugs were under warranty. Battery is good and it already has an alternator on it. I was afraid to drive it today. I usually drive it 70+ miles a day so I didn't know if it would make it.

you know trucks are like dogs in that they sense your fear and if they think you are afraid they will act up.

i do agree with William,
the 12.35 v does not mean the alt is bad, check out the other stuff he mentioned.

Well guys I have 40 lbs compression in cylinder 1 and 2, and 115-125 lbs in the rest. Also did a leak down test and have 100% leakage between 1 and 2.

What did the plugs in #1 and #2 cylinders look like?

Were they sooted up?

Did they have a green tinge to them?
