Kevin's tilt hood project

Post by Uncle Skip »

Got my package from Kevin last week with all those beautiful goodies for installing a tilt hood.
Folks, all I can say is, the workmanship in incredible. In fact, it might be to good because all those parts have crisp, clean, and did I mention sharp edges?
Also, not only were these pieces obviously machine cut, the welding has to have been done on a jig because the angles are so precise.
So, I've started breaking all those sharp edges. First with my grinder and then a file. Pretty much got them done and probably Wednesday they go in the bead blast cabinet to get ready for primer and paint.
It was a little tricky figuring out where everything goes, but once I got it noodled out it pretty much falls together. The directions included in the kit are good, but the pictures are small and hard to see so with Kevin's permission, I'm going to do a pictorial install so you can see exactly how things go.
First, here is a shot of all the parts included in the kit, and trust me, I couldn't even design this thing for what the kit cost.

Here is the main hood strut support bracket. I had a little trouble visualizing how it was supposed to mount, but it finally came to me with a little Zen and a cold Dr Pepper.

This picture of the main strut bracket mounts to the hood.

And finally, the main strut bracket piece that mounts to the core support. Note the angle on the bracket, so there is for sure a left and right and when I get them mounted up, I'll show you why and where. This took me more time than anything else to figure out.
Image

Like I said, all the steel parts go in the blaster and then epoxy primer and I'll post more as things move along. Stay tuned.

Skip, hopefully Kevin will repond, but I'm pretty sure you have the hood bracket backwards. If you look at Kevin's posts, it appears the part which was bolted together originally, and is a single piece on the current kit, has the thinner mount to the front to attach the gas strut. Look at his post in for sale, the final pic has a good shot of the installation on the hood.

Well duh. Thanks Paul. I'm pretty sure you're right.
I'll reverse the bracket and take another picture.
I was afraid of that after I looked at it.

Wouldn't be the same guy who refused to open his hood at a certain meet, would it? :P

Yes, you are correct. The mount in the third pic is the opposite side. The arm that is pointing backwards goes towards the front of the hood. That is where the gas shock mounts.
The most important part is the aluminum tubes. The knurled end goes up towards the hood on the passenger side and goes down towards the core support on the drivers side. This is important because if they are on backwards, the shocks will push on them, loosen the nuts letting the tubes spin and popping the shocks out of their socket.
Also make sure that you do put a washer on each side of the rod end bushing at the hood so that the bushings don't slide out of the rod end.
I probably need to look over the instuctions again and make a couple of changes. I have had a couple of people get the tubes on wrong. I will check the pics and see if I need to make changes.

Kevin, don't worry about the support tubes. I got that.
And I'll have everything tight and adjusted before I try any foolishness.
The kit is awesome. I just have to feel my way thru it.
Also, I'm going to use 1/16" neoprene sheet as a gasket under the brackets. Is that how you did yours?

I cut a thin piece of rubber and put under the brackets on mine. I didn't want to take a chance on anything scratching the paint. It really isn't needed, Ford never did anything like that but I did mine anyway.

Got all the sharp edges broken down and all the brackets bead blasted and pickled ready for primer and paint today.
I also located the mounting holes for the hood strut brackets and premounted them.
Since I'm a certified A-hole (I have the papers to prove it) I had to use a different process than Kevin's template for locating and drilling the mounting holes in the hood.
I located the rear hole 20-5/16" from the back of the hood per instructions and then drew a center line thru for all three holes 1-3/16" from the outside edge of the hood and thru the mark for the rear mounting hole. All the holes are on 5" centers indexed from the first one I located and drilled. This method turned out to be exactly right on. I just wasn't comfortable with holding the template up on the hood, but it turns out Kevin's template was almost the same as the way I did it.
Anyway, here are the progress pictures.

Quick Question Kevin....

Why does it matter what direction the aluminum tubes face? If they are tight, they don't know which end is up, left or right hand thread, shouldn't matter. I've used these same style tubes for 20+ years on race car suspension parts and always put my left hand towards the front or inside and right hand towards the rear or outside of the car, so in a hurry you knew which way to turn them for adjustments or quick repairs. What causes the tubes to have to be pointing a certain way? They shouldn't unscrew themselves because of the direction they are pointing, or am I missing something?

Thanks,

Spark,
It's the shaft collar that mounts to the tube. The gas spring mounts to it and will turn the tube if they are mounted wrong. The gas springs are 120 lb shocks so they have a lot of pressure to turn the tubes. The purpose of putting them opposite directions is to make the shock push into the nuts to make them tighter and not loosen them. They are right and left hand threads. They are also the same parts that you probably use on your race cars.
In a normal application, like a race car, your idea would be correct so you know which way to turn them. Your race cars don't have any twisting on the tubes like these do because of the shocks. Take an old one that you have, tighten it up, put a pipe wrench on it, twist it both directions and see if it doesn't come loose.
Sorry it wasn't a qick answer. This should make it clear as mud.

Skip,
You are correct in the way that you did that, I thought that it would be easier to explain with a template. When I did mine, it was similar to the way that you did.

Thanks Kevin. I tried calling you back but for some reason we're having phone troubles.
Anyway, I still can't get over how good the workmanship and quality is on this kit. Thanks again.

Got the brackets shot with epoxy primer and they're ready for paint.

The bracket on the core support will be black. The others will be the same white as the body so they don't stick out so much.

Kevin, I have a question.
What is the approximate distance between the center line of two rod ends on the support struts. I'd like to have a good starting point.

I made some progress today too. I painted the core support brackets black to match, and got the Lizzard Skin on the underside of the hood. According to LS, you can paint over the surface, so I'm planning to go back white underneath when I shoot the other brackets and the top the refinished top of the hood.
The spots are actually still damp Lizard Skin not puppy feet.
Once that's done, I can actually mount the hood and finish the tilt hood project.
I'm almost tempted to leave the natural finish. Almost.

Got the support struts located and mounted on the core support today. No pictures for now, but when I get some more progress done I'll post them then.

Got things painted and started mounting brackets and stuff. Kevin, take a look and see if I have the back roller in its proper place. So far, things are going pretty well. I just have to put my drivers side fender on so I can complete the tilt bracket assembly and then mount the hood.

Skip, The back hood roller is on the wrong side of the bracket.
