66 gas tanks

I have 2, 1966 F-250's, one parked in the barn and one I drive. The driver has a standard tank behind the seat. The parked truck is a custom cab. It has the tank behind the seat and also 2 tanks on either side of the bed. I have not seen this tank configuration on pics on the forum. Is it common? If you had your choice which set up is preferable? More safe?

Any saddle tanks that are on your truck are not Ford made and would be some sort of aftermarket tank. Hard to tell how safe they are. If they are outside the frame rail probably not real safe particularly in a side impact collision.

I thought there was a member here that had a factory side tank. I thought the fill tube was in the stock location and the pipe ran out the bottom of the cab and back to the tank.

I checked and these tanks are just inside the sheet metal, outside the frame. Accessed through a hole in the side of the bed. I believe I'll stick with the factory tank.

I pulled one from a 68. It was between drive shaft and frame. It had a bezzel that protected the filler neck that ran through the bed. All but bezzel fits both long and short bed 65 and 66. If you can find one youll need to cut the bezzel or make your own.

I have read in other web pages by some pretty knowledgeable people that Ford never made a saddle tank to be installed on the 61-66 pickup trucks. If it has one inside the frame it may have been adapted over from a later model truck as Chris is saying. I even owned a 66 F250 that had some of the after market saddle tanks that mounted outside the fenders. I used them all the time when I was cutting and hauling my own firewood . They didnt connect to the gage so you drove on them until the truck started to sputter and then I would switch to main tank or other saddle tank depending. I can say I felt safer having and using those tanks moreso than having the gas inside the cab with me.
