fuel issues?
fuel issues?
Hey guys! hopefully someone can help me. I have a stock 66 FE 352 with the 2bbl carb with the manual choke.
Heres my problem. Its rough to start. and when it reaches certain temperatures i know where to set the choke. When its at temp. i have to pull out the choke pretty far to keep it running. If i push in it runs rough then quits. same result if i move it the other way. I did found some chunks of crap in the fuel tank. removed them and blew out the fuel line from the tank to the pump, replaced the fuel filter. it ran better for a short time. now im back to square one. do you think it could be a fuel pump issue. or perhaps the carberator. thanks for your help!!

Re: fuel issues?
If your tank is full of crap, then odds are your fuel filter and carburetor are full of crap too. I had the same problem. I would look in the carb and see if it is full of fine little black particles that look vaguely like coffee grounds. You may also have them in your fuel filter. If you dry them out they are brown rust particles. Post back what you find and maybe we can figure this out.

Re: fuel issues?
i pulled the fuel line from the filter to carb. connected a hose and bottle. Cranked the engine over and im getting plenty of fuel. that ruled out the pump. checked the bottle and fuel is all clear no particles. so, i removed the carb and opened it up to find dirt and small rubber particles. so, my carb is dirty and most likely causeing my issues.
while the carb is off and since i cant truly identify what carb it is. i found the stamp on the side and i believe it has a 1.14 venturi. thats all the markings i can find. I think it might be time to convence the wife that i need the shinny Holley 2bbl 500 cfm carb.

Re: fuel issues?
If you clean the heck out of the carb and re assemble it it may fire right on up. One of the particles might be stuck in an idle port or something. If you post a picture of the carb someone on here will be able to id it.
That or else convince the wife you need the Holley.

Re: fuel issues?
when you close the choke to keep it running, you are creating more vacuum to pull fuel from the dirty or clogged passages, holley carbs are very sensitive to dirt. The other reason for needing choke is if you have a vacuum leak
why put off till tommorow what you can put off alltogether

Re: fuel issues?
Oh know this sounds crazy but pull your distributer cap off and check it. I had a similar problem and after tearing the carb apart and going through it and no change I pulled the distributer cap off and found it was wet inside and the contact in the top of the cap fell off. Also if you have had your plug wires off make sure your firing order is correct it will run if it is one off but very rough. Good luck I know what you are going through.

I run that carb on a 352 with no problems.jaythejug wrote:is anyone running the Holley 0-4412C 2bbl 500 cfm?
I have it sitting on a 1/2 inch spacer that is able to run heater hose water thru it if icing occurs in colder climates. I dont have that hooked up as it probably will not see a whole lot of winter driving anymore. I put that riser block under the carb because I dont believe the stock phanlic block gives it enough lift from the manifold to stop vapor lock and helps with better performance as far as the fuel droping into the manifold. Im trying to remember back to my hotrodding days as to why lifting the carb helps the fuel air mixture adomize better but there are reasons for it. The only mods to the engine are 40 overbore and a set of headers.

Re: fuel issues?
Oh make sure you check where the fuel line connects to the carb as there is a little brass filter inside of that housing. If I recall correctly there is a little spring inside of that housing so becareful if you open it up.

Re: fuel issues?
Well guys I FIXED IT!!
I looked into the gas tank and found a piece of duct tape by the pick up tube. (i have no idea why it was there?) removed it and found the rest of the tank shiney and clean. changed my fuel filter. didnt notice anything in the filter or bowl. i pulled the fuel line going to the carb and stuck a bottle on the end of it. turned the engine over a got plenty of fuel and ruled out the pump. the fuel line going to the carb is metal with a piece of tubing connecting to the fitting on the carb. that fuel line had sharp ridges that was cutting into the tubeing and creating small peices of rubber going into the carb. I found that out when i removed the top of the carb and got into the float bowl. along with some dirt and grime from the years. So, my fix was a brand spanking new shiney Holley 500cfm carb. I just finished the install and holy crap! what a difference that made!! It runs beautifully, so smooth! I still have some tweaking to do. But wow what a difference!!!
