A friend of mine has decided to sell his 65 f100 longbed and he is having trouble putting a price on it. Its a real solid truck with a rebuilt, beefed up 352 and 3 speed on the tree, however the truck is in all bare metal currently. He says he wants to get $2800.00 for it but I don't think it can happen so he has asked me to put a price on it. Here are some pics of it. Any advice or opinions would be appreciated. I told him that he may get more money parting it out if its that rust free, especially here in the rust belt lol.
Part of the problem is the bare sheet metal. All that bare metal is an invitation for surface rust. This just about eliminates anyone that doesn't have painting equipment or an inclination to do the work. The longer it sets in bare metal the more it will acquire surface rust. All of the bare metal willhave to be treated with ospho or a similar product. Otherwise it will have to be sanded down again. However, the main problem is it needs immediate attention to prevent rust, and it needs at least a primer coat. My opinion of the value is about 1500 to 2000 if you can find a buyer. Most people do not want something that demands that much imediate attention. I certainly would not give even that much unless I had someplace inside to work on it, and no other projects to compete with my time. AS is, the baremetal makes it something I would not have a place to store. It certainly needs to be put into epoxy primer after the metal is treated, and then shot with some kind of paint. The person that would buy the truck as is are few and most already have a truck or car they are working on. Advertising on this site would be a good idea in the trucsk for sale area. Parting the truck out is another can of worms of a different sort. The owner obviously has given up on the work aspect of the truck after going this far, and dismantling the truck is a lot more work, than finshing the exterior paint job. Bsides, what if he sells some parts and not the rest? I have tons of parts for these trucks, no-one is beating a path to my door looking for any of these. I will admit, that I don't try to sell the parts as I may need something for my own trucks. As to rust free, I have a few doubts. I see one area in the pictures at the bottom of the door post on the right side that looks like it is coming thru. This is common but indicitive rust in a bad area at the curve on the bottom. It is a solid truck, but even with the original paint on it your most likely talking 2,000 tops for an unrestored truck. As to the motor, if the work done was recent, then why does it look the way it does? Frankly, I know few people that would do motor work without at leastcleaning and painting the valve covers. YOu asked for an opinion on value, and it is a good truck, so let me be clear. I am not trying to run the truck down but give you a fair evaluation fo what it is and isn't , so I can justify my value estimate. I would not give but 1500 if I wanted the truck. Since I'm not in the market for a long bed truck, I would only give 1000 to 1200. We have a resident member known for salvaging these trucks as a business. He may give you a better idea of what it's worth in terms of salvage. Selling parts off these trucks is not an easy way to make money, and dismantling one is a lot of work and time. Again, your freind may be better off doing that, but this is a tricky trade off. Again, I would ask 21 to 2500 and then be prepared to take less. Parting the truck should bring around 2000 in my opinion if everything sells, which isn't likely.
how badly he wants to sell,or does he need the $ ,and how long he is willing to wait to get it are the determining factors.
at $2800 he will wait quite a while i think
at $1750-$1900 it will sell much sooner
he wont get near that parting it out, plus dealing with the dismantling and the many extra people to hassle with in the ads. one of the reasons i hate selling stuff on c/l is the many clueless responders who waste my time because they dont read the add and dont ask important questions, just stuff that was already posted.
as Rich said its a lot of work to properly take apart a truck and get the max value from all of the parts and you end up keeping some for years or selling them at whatever you can get to get rid of them.
those of us who deal in parts/salvage have not made a lot of $, i do ok but there are lots of better ways to make a living, i do it because i like working with and on trucks and i do it at home on my schedule.

Personally, I think $2800 is a pretty good price for a truck like that.
If nothing else, he could rattle can primer the thing. Most of the really hard work of stripping paint has been done and you can actually see there isn't any rust.
You all know how much time that takes, and what's your time worth?
If I were looking for a good solid project I'd pay that. That truck is going to save somebody a LOT of money.
U@ss
I'm not arguing with you. I'm just explaining why I'm right.
Pardon me. Does your deaug bite?
If I was looking for a truck, and given the choice of one that some "back yard bodyman" has been cobbling together and covering up with primer vs one in bare metal, where I can actually see what I am getting myself into (warts & all), I would pick the bare metal one. It doesn't take long to D/A flash rust off of panels & epoxy them.....much easier & quicker than trying to D/A off some shitty rattlecan primer!!
....and I couldn't EVER see myself trusting that the last guy did it right....so with the current cost of primers, paint, etc, would you be willing to risk all those $$ (Not to mention all the hours of your labour to go back & do it again when things go bad a year or two down the road.
) that the last guys work is going to stand the test of time, or do it yourself from the metal up & know it's done correctly.

I would spend the money for some tractor implement primer from Tractor Supply, shoot it in primer and stick to the $2800, It should sell for close to that running, driving and in primer.. just my , and I live in the rust belt also... if I had the cash and it was as I described, I'd buy it.
I am a painter by trade and THAT truck looks like a pretty decent one.
Also it looks like it is parked in a good place to enable someone like myself to mask it up, rub down the metal with Ospho or the like, and spray a couple of coats of epoxy primer over it before leaving with it provided that the seller would allow it to be done there. I notice in the pictures there are holes for chrome trim. Does the truck come with it or was it discarded? Also is the drivetrain roadworthy of a trip of a thousand miles or more? Are there windshield wipers for it? I noticed there weren't any on it. I probably have a lot more questions about it, but a complete truck in bare metal saves me a lot of work. If the engine and drivetrain are roadworthy, I would say it is probably worth around 2k or so. Being able to start using a truck rather than having to go completely through from the git go makes a lot of difference to me when I am looking for a truck to drive. Being able to make improvements on them while you can keep driving them to me is a plus. Did I read it right, you are in Ohio? TR
Yes the truck is in cincinnati ohio and he has all of the trim as well, which he says is in pretty good shape. I believe that he has all of the parts for it as well. I have not seen the truck in person and don't know all of the details but I am sure that he would give me more if anyone was interested. Also, I am sure that if the buyer wanted to prime it, it could be arranged in that facility (which has a paint booth).
