73 Column in 66?

Post by fordman7072 »

I'm needing a new column for my 66 and a guy on craigslist has a 3spd column out of a 73 and I just wanted to make shure it would fit. I read on fordification that a 73-79 will bolt into a 67-72 so I just wanted to make shure it would fit my 66.....thanks in advance.

It should fit without any issues. The only thing you're going to run into is the dash clamp welded to the column tube that doesn't go all the way around the tube like the one on your '66.

I removed the dash clamp from my '65 column and actually dropped it off at the welder this morning to put 4 spot welds on the '71 column.

Some people just use long bolts. Gregg actually posted a picture yesterday and I saw that is how the column was mounted.

My '65 on top and '71 on the bottom

See how the column is mounted on this truck using long bolts.

power steering

You also need to match the column to the steering box, manual or power steering.

Clamp

I always move the clamp. Not hard and in my opinion looks better. Buy a new boot from Carpenter before you rip the old one out. Consider a Tilt! I also like the Borgeson joing verses the rag joint. And it is not difficult to shortem a column. Course I only use C6's.
