6-71 detroit buildup

Post by Tech »

I am thinking about a truck project and putting it together in my head at the moment.
Possibly an old fire truck or an old Peterbilt. Something with a long nose and a center hinged hood no tilt nose no fiberglass. I want to power it with a 6-71 Detroit I have lots of cores available and they have a unique sound.
The marine industry pushes these old engines up to 485 HP with a bypass turbo and I don't know what else.
Does anyone have any knowledge on how to build a high HP Detroit?
I am looking for cam timing, injector size, blower mods, piston kit selection, cooling techniques and anything else that may apply.
I will be using a small light flywheel and minimal internal geartrain to maximize the throttle response and possibly give it some serious lope at idle.

Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner. A Republic is a well-armed sheep.

I hope I always stay crazy, because I know if I ever become sane, it will drive me crazy.
