The place to talk Slicks. All we ask is that discussion has something to do with slicks...

Better Mileage

Post by Blackwaterforge »

I (Like everyone else on the planet) would like more miles out of my outrageously priced gasoline.
Truck is a 66 Ford f-250 with 4.10 gears, 4-speed and stock 300 6 cyl.
Mileage is 13 mpg.
Carburator is Carter YF.
Truck is heavy.
RPM's at 65 are 2800-2900.
Would a overdrive transmission help?
4-barrel intake?
EFI exhaust manifolds?
Thank You!
If it cain't be fixed with a sledge hammer it must be an electrical problem!

clifford intake and 2v carb w clifford headers. more power and at least +3 and possibly +5 mpg. throw a t-5 behind the 6 to get the o.d.

OD trans would definitely help (would reduce RPM's at highway speeds) but you have to weigh the cost of the sway v.s the savings

Don't get a bigger carb or intake, but EFI does help - again, weigh the prices.

Shorter rear gears would certainly help.

Replacing the head with a 240 head will raise compression which will help to a degree as it will increase power production at all RPM's.

You should check these guys out - IIRC there's a whole section dedicated to this:

Thanks guys!
I don't want higher gears in the rear axle.
I frequently haul 2-3000 lbs.
Is a t-5 transmission good for towing and hauling?

Ice is the man here. I have one thing to add - you can retard your timing to move the torque curve back "down."

Thanks Guys!
What about a Clark 280VO?
Are parts available?
Is it a direct bolt in?

similar to the clark 251V and VO
they use the early fat input shaft spline and bolt pattern and are mounted with the ears of the bell housing. used on the medium duty trucks, they are also a heavy weight, 186 lbs.

would bolt up to a 240/300 6 with the eared bell and correct pilot bushing but there is no way to mount it to your truck without also using the crosmember for the bell.
only an issue on the twin i beam trucks, the rest 61-64 and 4x4 (except 66 f100 4x4)not a problem.
