Wanting to change gears, what did low gears come in ???

Post by Southern64 »

I have a 64 with 302/C4 swapped in. Talked to a bunch of people that suggested lower gears, like 300 ? I am currently getting 6mpg, I just got her to run after 5 years, and now can't afford to drive. So what vehicles can I find these low gears in to donate? I think I have a have a 9" rear with 350 or 370 somethhings now. Looking for 300-320 somethings? haha thanks

Also will this just make it dog slow?

2.70 and 3.00 gears are plentiful at the yards. If you're going to buy a take out chunk, just make sure its a 28 spline. If its a 31 spline, you can swap out the pinion as a complete unit in your old housing and put the ring on where your existing carrier. You'll have to get someone to set the lash on the new gear, but that isn't really a big deal..
I just finished a brand new 2.70 open for cruising and when I go to Slick Stock. My 3.25 posi is not mileage friendly.
I'm not arguing with you. I'm just explaining why I'm right.
Pardon me. Does your deaug bite?

Do a seach on my name, I asked this question earlier in march/feb and got lots of good feedback...on potential drawback that was pointed out to me was... starting form a stop on hills gets a bit tricky with the weight of the truck and the lower number gears....so I'm still deciding myself

the lower gears you have the better you mpg will get but you wil definatly lose torque. a few other thing you could do to improve your mpgs is go down on wheel size adjust you ignition timing rebuild your carb and improve your fuel management
